Hi Everyone! Sorry I haven't been around but have been real busy working on stained glass. (Another hobby of mine) Keesha just had her first birthday on the 6th which coincidently is the same day as my mother's and my birthday is today the 18th. Not telling which! BG It took me 15 minutes to download all the old notes so I will read them off line. I was thinking about sending Keesha to a trainer but would like some input first. I am not thinking about training her for tricks, just basic obediance type training. Right now she has to be on a leash when out of her cage in the house. If I let her loose she runs rampant tearing up things and running from me. When she is in her cage she cries for attention. That is why I am thinking about "formal" training. I love her dearly and would love for her to sleep with me, etc. like I hear about people on here doing with their monkeys. That would be the ultimate for me but it just isn't possible with Keesha. She is much too hyper. She doesn't seem to care if I say "NO". Anyway, does anyone know of any trainers? I know of one but haven't called them yet. They are located pretty far from here in St. Louis. Any opinions on training? Suggestions? Talk to ya'll sooN. Pam & Keesha (wild child)

Hi!! How come every time I sit down to write, Tucker gets hungry!! Huh, interesting phenomanon!!! Anyway, really quick, Tucker birthday was June 2, so I guess that makes him a little over 4 weeks old. He is doing really great and gained over 35grams in under a week!! For such a small guy, I thought It was kind of impressive!! But then again, I am used to looking at Hooti, my tamarin, and at her weight gain!!! I think Tucker is actually going to pass her up soon!! LOL!! To Cindi, I am sorry to hear about Mitten's finger!!! It is horrible to watch them get so swollen!!! I cant wait to hear all about him and all your adventures!! Were did you get him?? No one around here raises them, except for the man who had Hooti's parents, and I am always on the search for an unrealted male. She is about a year and a few months old and has started sitting outside and calling for a mate!! (I think!! She could be yelling at the birds for all I know!!) But I know she would LOVE a playmate!! I am also interested in how much Mittens weighs, so I can compare to Hooti's size to make sure she is on track!! It is really great to meet everyone and I hope to talk to you all very soon!! Welcome back from your trips!! Heather, Hooti, and Tucker!!!!

Yes, Cricket is my first capuchin, and also the first monk I've had since early infancy. As a child our family had a squirrel monkey, and then a wooley (both females). I was given a pig-tail macaque in college, also a female. About ten years ago I purchased a Java macaque, a male. Prior to Cricket, the Wooley was by far, the most wonderful creature. She had a charming personality and was gentle with everyone. My Java was as good as he could be, at times very sweet, but very, very unpredictable and definitely a wildman. He was tough as nails, never sick a day in his life, so it was a shock to come home one evening and find him near death in his cage. The squirrel was hyper and from what I hear very typical of the breed. I really would not care to own another squirrel. In my experience the Wooley was definitely the best all around pet, but they are impossible to get now. I feel really blessed to have had one for the time that I did. Cricket is a keeper though and I am definitely happy with my decision to have her in my life. Alice

I first sign on to Prodigy in July 1991 and started the subject in the Pet Bulleton Boards "About Apes and Monkeys" and it is still an active subject on Prodigy even to this day. I have tried to post something about N-H-Primates daily on the BB Apes and Monkeys which it is called today. When I started it I did so to learn all about threm because we had a spotnose guenon monkey named Trouble living in our living room since June 1990 and wanted to learn all I could to be a good monkey caretaker. He will be nine years old this August 1998. Brad and Trouble

Hi Brad!!! Im glad to see that Trouble is ok after his bout with the string. Also glad to hear that your birds sexual identity has finally surfaced. I think I told you that I had a volunteer at the zoo whose sister is in hawaii working with Dr. Patterson and KOKO, Lisa said that her sister was very disillusioned about the whole thing, she also said that they were not ready for the big move:Permits etc. maybe she got there and got home sick or something, I would give my left arm to be able to work there. I have always thought that they were doing great stuff, I know that it isnt very"scientific" but what breakthroughs!!!Well I thought I would give you the latest news from my inside source. Talk to you later and give Trouble a big ole hug for me. Michael-the sheriff of ZooTown

In the last issue of the journal of the Gorills foundation they showed concerns about the trip. I will try to find time to type out the rest of the Maui article tonight. our two parakeets are staying on their own sides of their cage. Once in awhile Jaimie with go over to Jimmy and force him to the bottom of the cage and he is a little bigger then her. I won't make any jokes here. VGG!! Michael I might get in Trouble with the women readers? Brad and Trouble the cannibal his mommy says!!!

That poor thing...she reallys gets the blunt of his attacks doesn't she? But, I know Elaine, and she is just like me... the bites are MINOR to the satisfaction and happiness our babies bring us! *Ruth* & Natasha

Michael Jackson had gotten rid of his chimp, Bubbles, because he had grown older and was difficult to care for. An inventory taken on 25 July 1991 showed Jackson holding 3 chimpanzees, a rhesus monkey, an African lion, 3 giraffes, 10 deer, 3 llamas, a goat, 1 donkey, 1 sheep and one two week old zebra. the British newspaper "Sun" Jacko Leaves Bubbles to rot This pathetic creature huddled up in a cage is Michael Jackson's pet Bubbles. It is a sight that will shock millions who remember the chimp as Jackon's constant companion. Bubbles has been abandoned by the superstar. It is four years since Jackson handed over his pet to an animal refuge and he has not seen him since. Now the chimp who used to ride in stretch limos and sleep in his famous master's bed is languishing in a virtual prison near Los Angeles. When Jackson got fed up with Bubbles, he was sent to live with animal trainer Robert Dunn, who claimed that Jackson never asked about Bubbles and never paid any money for his care. Brad and Trouble

Hi, I know that there are some people that do not approve of Michael Jackson but let me clear up one important issue. His animals at Neverland are not abused or neglected in any way. I know this for a fact because I have been there on several occasions. The vet that takes that is in charge is one of the top exotic vets in the country. I would ask you to consider your source of information. Also his inventory is a little more than what you mentioned. They have a full time staff caring for the animals Kathi Travers

Brad, I have not been on line for a while but I did notice your note about Ebola. I worked very closely with the infected monkeys when they first came into the states in New York. Unfortunatly I know Ebola all too well. I see can see the faces of all those animals. Did you see the piece on 48 Hours about monkeys? I love red howler monkeys. LA Zoo has the only troope in this country. They are wonderful monks. Poco is the leader. Together with ET, Max [she's due to give birth anytime soon] and Mayless. A great groupe of monks. Hi, Kathi, your name is very familiar. I do save all notes here but there are so many. That's maybe why your name seems familiar. But I have a feeling I read something you wrote in the Simian. Is my feeble mind playing tricks on me? No, Kathi, I didn't see the piece on 48 hours. I wish there was a special TV guide for just shows on monkeys? VBG!!! That reminds me I have a list somewhere of Primate shows in October on the Discovery Channel. Better get my act together. Someday I would love to visit the LA zoo. I have heard so much about it. Red Howler (Alouatta seniculus) in the wild. From N. Columbia and Venezuela S to Amazon, including the Guianas: S of Amazon from Andes east to Rio Madeira, S to Bolivia. Head and Body lenght 18-28 inches; female 10 lb; male 14 lb. Coat: Orange-brown. Howlers often live in harems in which the male monopolizes 1-3 females. Howlers have loud roars. A male that takes over a new group may kill young infants present. That was in my primate book. They are in the chapter on capuchin-like monkeys. Thanks Kathi for writing here. Oh, you said you worked very closely with the infected monkeys when they first came into the states in New York. Just curious when that was. The reason is I am wandering when importation of monkeys became illegal. Best wishes to Max's future baby. Brad and Trouble

Hi Brad, I spent many years as director of the ASPCA's Animal port at JKF, We housed everything from canaries to elephants. We recieved lots and lots of monkeys most of which wre headed for research.I still have nightmares over some of the things that I had to deal with. It was because of what was going on out there and the fact that we went public with it that the commissioner of heath, Dr. David Axelrod put the first ban which woke up CDC. We had to have all of our staff tested for Ebola and one did test possitive.Everything is ok with that person now.I remember it all to well. You still cannot bring certain species through N.Y.I rescue, rehabilitate and place exotics however my focus is on monkeys. Alex Rraser and I are very good pals. I've just been transferred from NY to LA. It's nice to be able to read this BB. There is alot of information. I will be returning to the east to speak at Uof Conn. at the end of this month. Speak to you again. Kathi

I really agree with you. Most people think that monkeys and apes stay cute and adorable forever that isn't being realistic. I get calls all the time from people wanting monkeys but more calls come from people begging me to take them and get them a good home. I have a very frustrating job.I think that there is really a small minority of people qualified to take on that responsibility.I recently did a segment on 48 Hours just on that topic. Kathi

Well, I found an even older disk of saved Apes and Monkeys notes. At that time before Prodigy went plus there were several zoo people on the A&M BBs, One was a primate caretaker name Pat Discoll who was working in the Primate house at the Hogle Zoo in Utah. Some notes from him. Brad and Trouble.

Hello all my friends, It has been a long time since last I was here. But thought to put in my two cents worth. Today Tino broke the lick-it in his room. Needless to say we had one surpised gorilla when he got his shower and a mess to clean up. We had to just repair it temporaly, lets hope Dan lets it be tonight. I also thought to add this as for most apes going extinct it is true...all but man are endangered. But it seems their may be one last place for the apes to hold out let us hope that the Ndoki remains a haven for them.

I think this site is wonderful, I am a current (almost BA) of anthropolgy in Indiana. I am trying to get my feet firmly into primate studies. I really have no where to start and very little help, so I appreciate reading the comments from all you experienced folks. If anyone has any suggestions for me, feel free to e-mail, Thanks again!
