SPIDER MONKEY (Ateles geoffroyi)
Many people assume that all monkeys hang by their tails. The fact is that only some species of New World primates have prehensile tails (tails adapted for grasping), and no Old World species have them. The bare skin on the underside of a prehensile tail looks and feels like a hand. It has fine ridges and lines and is remarkably adaptable.
Here's a thought: wouldn't it be handy to have a prehensile tail ourselves? It provides a fifth appendage with which to hang from, freeing hands and feet to explore for and gather food. Longer than the arms and legs, it also works to reach objects that would otherwise be too far away. The tail helps provide stability in situations calling for balance. Attempting to deal with an animal with five appendages is interesting to say the least. Particularly when the feet can also function like hands. There are five gripping or ungripping mechanisms, seemingly coming from everywhere. And we haven't even counted a set of sharp, gripping teeth.
Spider monkeys are found primarily in Peru, Ecuador, Brazil and Guiana in South America. The long-haired spider monkey is found as far north as Mexico. They tend to live in groups of about forty to fifty, but may separate into smaller groups throughout daily activity. Their habitat is being destroyed by deforestation, and they are sought for food and for pets in South America.
They are extremely active, appealing, vocal and display an array of facial expressions. Brad and Trouble

Hey, I was just looking around on the net for animals in the rainforest (science project) when I found the monkey that my science group is studing. I know alot about the Spider Monkey, but I had to learn it all through researching in books (boring). I just thought it was cool that people cared enough to tell other people of the animals in the rainforest (especially the Spider Monkey) so that others could learn from the knowledge.

The one thing we have not found out yet is the spider monkies
predators. Other than people killing the monkies to feed them to
their pets, they must have some natural predators of the animal kind.

I recently attended the Los Angeles Zoo to do an Anthropology project. There I decided to concentrate on the spider monkeys for they were one of the more active primates at the zoo. Standing around 19" tall with a tail around 27 inches or so long these brown furred animals put on a show for everyone around.
While waching the spider monkeys for a period of 60 minutes I noticed a lot of things. One they have a tendency to act a lot like humans in that one of the younger females aggravated an older male by swinging over his head and letting out a little cry. By doing this the female annoyed the male causing him to look up and try to attack. The male lifted up his arm and grabbed the females hand thus pulling her off of the rope she was swinging on. Then she sat down beside him and they looked at each other, then she ran away.
If you get a chance to observe these animals I guarentee you will have a great time
