GORILLA FAMILY FOR KOKO?
Dear Member, Koko has recently asked me to help her have a baby. Indeed, I have become acutely aware that she needs assistance. With only male gorillas as companions, she is not now in a setting where she would naturally start her family. In their natural habitat, gorillas never exist in pairs; they are always found in troops of a silverback male, several females and their offspring. My vision is to create this family structure now for Koko: We are endeavoring to have another female gorilla join her.
I hope that you share my vision for the gorillas, because it is your support that will make it happen. Koko, Michael and Ndume rely on your continued generosity to turn this vision into a reality for them. We have set three top priorities for the welfare of gorillas:
1. To create a natural social group of gorillas here as soon as possible because the gorillas' social and psychological needs are best met living in a large social group with members of their own species.
2. To provide a more spacious habitat for the gorillas already in our care, as well as for other gorillas who are in need of a safe haven. To accomplish this, as you know, we have been working tirelessly to develop our 70-acre gorilla preserve on Maui. With the road to the preserve site and the reservoir for the water supply completed, and $1.5 million in the preserve fund, we are busily fundraising and networking so that we can proceed to the next step, the gorilla facilities.
3. To continue and increase our efforts to protect free-living gorillas in Africa. Koko's persuasive influence as an ambassador for her species has already helped, and we must continue to expand our alliances with those working directly in the African countries where gorillas are endangered by hunting and habitat destruction. Accomplishing our first two objectives will also move us in the direction of this third goal. The preserve on Maui will serve as a alternative habitat for any gorillas who need sanctuary. And the development of natural breeding social groups will help to ensure the genetic health of an important gorilla population those living in human care. For if all our best efforts to efforts to reverse current trends in Africa fail, it is still sadly possible that the few hundred gorillas living in human care could end up being the world's only viable gorilla population.

From: Tracy Ketcher on 11/23/98Hey everbody! Saturday afternoon there was a National Geographic documentary on KQED called "The Urban Gorilla" copyrighted in 1973 and hosted by Robert Urich. There were some non-invasive techniques for artifical insemination with captive female gorillas that I found very interesting. You probably know and/or have the video already but I just thought you might be interested in it just incase ya'll don't have it in the library. It is $19.95 (+ $3.95 for S&H) and obtainable by calling National Geographic at 1-800-627-5162. Good luck to everyone and happy holidays.

TO ALL OF THOSE WHO LOVED MICHAEL,
We all know he was an extraordinary gorilla. From his paintings to his jokes. Michael was there. His family was also there for him, until they were slaughtered by poachers. Michael witnessed his family being murdered. He expressed his feelings to Dr. Patterson and the other caretakres. When he passed away, part of us died with him. His passing hurt Koko and now we have to be their for her, and most of all we owe it to Michael.
Michael, from th bottum of my heart,
From the deepest part of my soul,
I miss you,
Wherever you are,
Thank You!
