The Results Of Frisky's Annual Garage Sales
First-A really big thank you to all of the contributors who donated sellable items for the garage sale.
Frisky's neighbor; Hazel Beckett sold her farm to move into a retirement village. We're not to mention her age-but she is in her nineties. She donated everything from jewelry to furniture. We weren't sure how many items were antiques or early American junk, but with our low prices many bargains were available.
Dentist, Bob Warman and his wife, Barbara put garage sale ads in six newspapers and even donated over 11,000 books (recent best sellers) along with nick-nacks and household goods.
Ads really helped to make our Garage Sale a success.
John Graver, called a local radio station that mentioned our sale and he donated over two dozen boxes of items from toys to tools and even donated computers and printers and typewriters.
Shirley Mellor sold candy and brought in $225.00 on April 12, 1998. A stranger came in and donated $100.00. May God Bess Him!
Clothes Do Not Sell!
We found that clothing does not sell-washed, ironed, and well displayed on individual handlers. Even brand new clothes did not sell well although they were current styles, clean and neatly displayed. Everything was priced from 50 cents to $1.00. So thanks but we won't be accepting clothes anymore for Garage Sales.
The Best Help was from Sandy Davison and her daughter, Kelly. They hung clothes, cleaned, polished, arranged and priced everything even handled the hagglers who thought our give-away low prices weren't low enough!

Donation $2,600.00. For Floor and Drain
Dear Friends of Frisky's
She said she was saving it for a rainy day. Guess it must have rained, because Barbara Warman, wife of dentist Bob Warman, gave Frisky's her rainy day fund of $2,600.00. Barbara's wonderful gift couldn't have come at a better time. All the money set aside for the building of the new Macaque (Monkey) House had already been spent and it was unfinished. The money will be used for the flooring of the building which must consist of 4 inches of stone, then wire, plastic drains, and then 5 inches of concrete. All of the primates (human and otherwise) want to thank Barbara and Bob Warman for their very generous gift to Frisky's building fund.
Note: Dr. Bob Warman is a weekly visitor to Frisky's Sanctuary- always bringing gifts-from bananas to tooth brushes. We believe the monkeys are his favorites.

Johnny, a capuchin, and Dr. Bob (dentist) talk about the days events. Johnny enjoys a much needed bottle of refreshment with Dr. Bob looking on.
Oogie (capuchin) keeps the blue tooth brush close at hand for her brush-ups!
Kids Want To Know!
How tell if it is a hen or a rooster?
Hens have tails that stick straight up or out.
Rooster tails round over - he is dressed up and strutting his stuff.
Updates:
Squirrel Monkey, Martin is back with his family; (wife) Nicole, and (son) Squeaky. Martin's cancer is in remission.
Monkeys love to watch TV Zoie, a Bolivian Squirrel numley, loves to watch animals on TV.
Although Babee and Willie (capuchins) turn their backs on each other they enjoy life together.
Rescued Critters - What happens to all of the animals when they are well again? They get returned back to the woods.... usually the State Parks.
Colleen is being groomed by Oogie. Very tired-Colleen, who has contracted lyme disease, finds is hard to keep up with the chores and worries.
He caught and ate a few annoying flies, hut it only takes a few. Our sweet littie 1 year old Johnny, weeper capuchin, got sick and felt bad for 24 hours.

July August Newsletter Part 1
Colleen Layton's childhood and ongoing nickname is Frisky. This title makes a statement about her 'way of being'.
The following is an introductory article describing the business that has become Colleen's life since 1970. If you can help Frisky to continue her work please do so. In essence many of us do some of these same works within our daily living, just not on the same scale! At least the feeling and understanding is there based on first hand animal lover's experience!
Editor. mn
Spring 1998
What is this place? Who is Colleen? Why (and how??) does she maintain this hectic life-style day after day, 365 days a year?
Colleen Layton and Scott Robbins, run a wildlife and primate sanctuary in Woodstock, Maryland, just north of Ellicott City in Howard County. Colleen takes care of the animals and Scott, besides working a full time job, keeps the facilities in working condition and maintains the grounds of their 5 acre property, as well as donates his paychecks to the sanctuary.
Colleen takes in three types of animals:
1. Wildlife that has been injured or orphaned.
2. Domestic animals, such as rabbits, and farm animals that are sick or who have become pets, but can't be kept by their owner.
3. Primates that come from laboratories, sanctuaries or private owners around the country before it became illegal to own primates without a license.
Many of the primates at Frisky's became too aggressive to handle or the owner became ill. Also, many infant primates come to Frisky's if their mothers do not properly care for them. Colleen describes her collection of animals in the following way: "If it's not sick, mentally or physically handicapped, or orphaned, then it doesn't belong here." She jokingly includes herself in this description, saying you'd have to be crazy to live like this...but she also wouldn't trade it for anything.
At Frisky's, the injured wildlife are cared for and, if able to be rehabilitated, will be released in a nearby state park. The orphaned wildlife, unless they can be trained to care for themselves in the wild, will be kept and cared for at Frisky's for life, as will the permanently injured wildlife. Rabbits and farm animals are cared for until a good home is found for them. The primates are not up for adoption and will be kept at Frisky's for life. The animals that stay at Frisky's for life are affectionately known around the sanctuary as "Lifers." Every effort will be made to give these animals a fulfilling and enriched life.

Monkey's Behavior by Colleen Layton
Monkeys behave like a two year old, a teenager, a husband and someone who suffers PMS all rolled up into one! Two year Olds are fast and full of energy. They're into everything and always testing you! Teenagers want their own way and will fight and disagree with you at the drop of a hat--especially if you try to control them! Sometimes they're "juvenile delinquents" and steal from you. If they do--it's theirs! A husband wants to keep himself neat and clean but is sloppy with his things, food and surroundings--and then expects someone else to clean up after him--plus serve him his meals! Husbands always expect something from the kitchen, if you're coming back from there! The PMS (Primitive Mood Swings) come with no warning, like this menopause I'm going through--sweet and nice, then bite your head or hand off, then come back apologizing!?!
ANIMAL CONTROL LAWS SECTION 17.300
Animal Control Law with which all animal owners should be familiar.
10. Wild or exotic animals are not permitted as pets included in this category are the offspring of a domesticated animal bred with a wild or exotic animal.
Frisky's welcomes your donations and thanks you for your support.
WHAT TICKS OFF MONKEYS! (as it would us as well) by Colleen Layton, Manager
Getting too close as "IN YOUR FACE" or "STARING" when you don't even know each other. Looking in their windows at them and their stuff.
Reaching out towards them-then jerking back.
Being near them and not saying "Hi!" or their name.
Not sharing what you are eating or drinking in front of them.
Letting them see something they want-but can't get to or have.
Touching, removing, or rearranging "THEIR STUFF."
Making any loud noise in "THEIR SPACE" or "AREA."
DON'T EVER FORGET (THEY WON'T) - their memory is better than ours... and saying you are sorry - does not and will not change any wrong or any hurt!
ALWAYS REMEMBER they are natural, open and honest with their feelings and they read body language. And like us, can be grouchy when they are either hungry, bored, or need sleep. MONKEY BEHAVIOR"IF You DON'T LIKE IT THEY WON'T LIKE IT EITHER!"
Babee, a Weeper Capuchin, was born on Sept.23, 1995 and now lives at Frisky's Sanctuary. Diana, a Vervet Guenon monkey lives at Frisky's Sanctuary. Mr Bojangles, one of the Larger residents of the new monkey house shows both his passive and active moods. Johnny a Weeper Capuchin, enjoys fruits and vegetables. Charlie, a Squirrel monkey, is minus his long, handsome tail. The picture of sweetness and light, meet Cindy Lou. Rachelle, a Rhesus Macaque monkey -when she speaks we listen. Scotty, Jr. is a Vervet Guenon monkey. Squeaky a Squirrel monkey loves cheese. Lou & Cocoa "Are we cute or what!" Willie, Apple-faced Capuchin monkey loves popcorn. CoCo is a male Rhesus monkey relaxes after a hard day.

A TRUE FRIEND
A friend is one who's on your side
Someone in whom you can confide.
One who consoles you when you're sad
And turns depressing days to glad.
A friend is there through thick-and-thin, Caring, concerned and genuine.
A special someone with the gift
To give your heavy heart a lift.
When you're down and in despair
A faithful friend is always there.
They do not scold or reprimand and always seem to understand.
So, if you have but one true friend
To be there for you to the end,
Thank the Lord and say a prayer-
You're richer than a millionaire.
Feline Homes Are Needed
This is an appeal for homes for homeless cats and kittens. They are "throwaways," in many cases, and in all cases they are fine companions looking for someone to care for them. They are being temporarily sheltered at a clean-but im- practical-facility in Howard County.
"Why impractical," you may ask? Their housing is impractical because it happens to be a wildlife rehabilitation facility, Frisky's Sanctuary, which has no sources for pro viding for these "throwaways."
Colleen has dedicated her life to service of "sick, mentally or physically handicapped, or orphaned" wildlife. She is one of few rehabilitator certified to shelter primates, who come from laboratories, sanctuaries, or from private, illegal owners, from around the country.
In addition to caring for these needy primates, Colleen must divert portions of her already limited resources to caring for domestic animals irresponsibly dumped in her driveway, such as this small box, taped shut with a few air holes punched into it, that contained eight kittens.
Colleen acted quickly to revive the kittens through obtaining veterinary treatment, washing and feeding them. She bore the expense of the kittens and medicating their infected eyes. These kittens were very lucky to be rescued; many aren't. Many cats and dogs of all ages are often abandoned, or dumped at remote locations, by people who fail to neuter their pets. Their justifications include, "I wanted them to just have one litter, to enjoy the experience," or, "maybe I can find homes for them," etc. Can you truly guarantee these offspring a safe, permanent home where they will receive care and attention from responsible and loving care givers? Clearly, we need to look at the big picture: Are not our pets entitled to the same quality of care we would afford another human, or hope to receive, as humans?
These "throwaways" need homes before winter comes; a home with four walls and someone who will care for them. Are you that someone?

Hello! I just want to let you all know that Frisky's Wildlife Is an important place in this community. She does a lot for the primates, and wildlife that live at the sanctuary. I stop by personally every so often to drop food and other goodies off every so often. Colleen and the family are honest and hardworking people. If you have been to the house you would see she really does not take any for herself. It goes to the animals. I know that there are many people trying to talk about Friskys like she is in it for the money. But look at where these people are coming from. What area's?? What backgrounds?? I know first hand Colleen is truly honest and does a whole lot for these animals in need. She loves her job and I am sure she would not have it any other way. Thank you Kelli Carpenter.

NEWS FLASH
The Life saver Collean Layton Owner of a So CALLED Sanctuary (FRISKYS) Seems to have made the news. But I am sure you good people only heard her about what a life saver she is and needs your money. Well it seems that Miss Layton made the Baltimore Sun news back in 1995.When Animal Control and Department of Nateral Resorces Police went to her place and took racoons that she was breading from her and put them down. She has claimed to all her supporters that she is a Wildlife Sanctuary. Well not according to DNA Police. All the wildlife were her pets and her HOBBY but she still put out newsletters asking the public to support her hobby. If anyone is interested in the truth about this ,I will send a copy of the Baltimore Sun to Monkey Matters for all to view.
I have been reading about the Ritterspach's and their monkey that was taken by Animal Control and how Collean Layton said they were irresponsiable primate owners and packs her newsletters full of newspaper articles about how they took Jamie into the public and indangered the public. She feels thay should never get Jamie back. Well, have your heard the saying :PEOPLE THAT LIVE IN GLASS HOUSES, SHOULD'NT THROW STONES?
It seems that Miss Layton has had her own problems with taking monkeys out into the public. Suchas the case in Howard County where she took herPet monkey into a Department Store and the woman sued her for a million dollars. It is public record. It is case #90ca15092, the Department store was sued and Layton. Now if you are the SSA you would want to believe the story Friskys told and wouldnt want to believe that they help support her Hobby. You see if all her supporters took the time to check her out they would find that she is not USDA licenced is not Licenced with the State to be fundraising. If she were then she would have to explain where all those baby monkeys came from. If her supporters found out that their donations went to buy baby monkeys and support her hobby, they would look bad. Let me just say that Miss Layton has been stealing from the public and getting away with it that the money became soooooooooooo good she could'nt stop herself.

From: on 12/19/01Reviewing legal and ethical issues of the matter of Frisky's Wildlife vs. the Ritterspachs, from BOTH sides of the story:
- Ritterspachs owned the monkey, and took it into public places despite repeated warnings from the community and police after it bit and harmed several persons
- Ritterpachs took the monkey into a local bar where it again bit at least 2 people
- Animal Control seized the monkey since the Ritterspachs failed to adhere to the warnings of local law enforcement officials
- Animal Control had two options for the monkey: destroy it (as it would with a dangerous dog that continues to bite and harm people) or take it to a sanctuary with the proper facilities to house the monkey. Animal Control opts for the merciful option and houses it with Frisky's
- Frisky's takes control of the animal, paying for its upkeep, food, shelter, medicine
- Ritterspachs, distraught over the loss of their dear pet, engage in a slander campaign to put Frisky's out of business and regain their pet
If the outcome has not already been determined, I hope that the court does not favor the emotional, careless, irresponsible owners of the pet over the safety of the public at large. The Ritterspachs were warned many times by the authorities to not bring the pet into the public after it had bitten many people. Fortunately (or unfortunately?) the physical well-being of the unsuspecting, untrained general public outweighs in importance the emotional yet irresponsible pet owner.
