Texas Snow Monkey Sanctuary /Arashiyama West Box 702 Dilley, Texas 78017 (830) 378-5881
The Animals
the Japanese Snow Monkeys have thrived in South Texas since 1072, when the naturally occurring intact group was moved from Japan. In Japan, they would have faced ultimate destruction. Here in Texas, they have found sanctuary. Also, a small group of vervets (African Green Monkey) that have been rehabilitated from laboratories, zoos, and former pet homes live with the snow monkeys. Each monkey is known on sight, marked, identified, and lives with a minimum of human intervention. Their social behavior is extremely complex; with each member of the troop having its own hierarchical rank.
The Site
Today, the majority of the animals are housed on a ranch near Dilley, Texas. After moving from their old home on Burns' Ranch in 1996, the monkeys have a new home owned by the Sanctuary in Millett, Texas. The monkeys are able to safely range over 60 acres of mesquite brush, prickly pear, and planted fields in a newly constructed enclosure bordered by an electrical fence.
They are fed once a day, and exist with a minimum of human interference. They are used to presence of at least one human behavioral observer, whom they ignore. The snow monkeys have adapted beautifully to South Texas, living longer and growing larger than the monkeys in Japan.
The Sanctuary has been featured on National Geographic's World and GEO magazines, ABC World News Tonight, CBS Morning and Evening News, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal. As well as in newspaper articles throughout the U.S., Canada, and Japan. The snow monkeys are also the subjects of an upcoming National Geographic Explorer piece.
The Rehabilitation
The Sanctuary has the luxury of time and space that most facilities lack. The animals can develop at their own pace. The facility has in the past, and is currently in the process of reintroducing animals back into a more natural way of living.
Instead of euthanasia, terminal protocols, or a solitary life in a tiny cage, rehabilitated animals are given a second chance to return to a more natural life. Former research animals, pet monkeys and zoo surplus have all found a home at the Texas Snow Monkey Sanctuary.
The Studies
The Sanctuary is unique in the Western Hemisphere. The troop is the only group of primates in the world made up of intact families, half of which live in Texas, and the other half still lives in Japan. The studies that take place at the Sanctuary are also unique.
The animals are studied by the use of NON-INVASIVE techniques. This means that the animals are observed but neither manipulated nor interfered with, if the animals contact a disease or develop a condition such as heart disease, they are monitored or treated while in their family units.
The troop of monkeys offers an example of preservation by transplantation -- moving wild monkeys from an environment where they are endangered to sanctuary ans survival. This is, in essence, conservation in action.
The Texas Snow Monkey Sanctuary is a nonprofit organization.
The snow monkeys of the Texas Snow Monkey Sanctuary/Arashiyama West were transported to Texas in 1972 to save them from certain destruction in Arashiyama, Japan. The goal of the Sanctuary is to care and provide refuge for the original troop of monkeys from Japan which continues to be joined by a number of rehabilitated monkeys who have come to them from labs, zoos and pet homes. The Sanctuary provides a permanent social group and a more natural way of living for these retired animals. Brad and Trouble

Iīm currently working as a volunteer in a small zoo. At the place there is a pair of snow monkeys, with a baby from may this year. Iīm looking for information on how long the baby is dependent on the motherīs milk, how soon can we hope to expect another baby, what is the proper size of cage etc.
As you may see, Iīm looking for any kind of information on snow monkeys. I have access to a library at a university, but donīt know which books or articles to order.

The Texas Snow Macaques are wonderful. It is so nice to see a large troop of monkeys in a natural as possible site. The way they get along and follow their normal monkey routines is awsome. The monkeys fight but not for long because dominance was set a long time ago. They are curios about you and watch every move you make but do not threaten you or try to attack as long as you keep to yourselfCheryl. Lou has done a fabulous job with the sanctuary and would appreciate any help from donations she can get.

I think that no animal should be used as a pet exspecally monkeys. They have the same free will as we do.How would you like it if you were a pet?

I think the Sanctuary is a good idea,Because not only is man saveing an animal that has been around as long as cave man.The Primate's are safe and not being harmed by poachers, people,They wont run out of food because they are getting fed everyday so they dont hafe to worry about starving,They will not get harmed because we are keeping them safe...Think how good it makes you feel when you no a defensless animal know's nothing about how dangerous the wourld or people can be twords him and your saveing him.Like helping a blind man walk. It's a wonderful feeling, and the good people that like animal's get to learn about them more and see them in person in the sanctuary.Thats cool!!!!

Since our DNA is so close to monkey/primates it is our responsibility to care and support, just as we would any human, primate forever.
