TEN COMMANDMENTS
FOR RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERS
1. My life is likely to last 10 to 15 years. Any separation from you will be very painful.
2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.
3 Place your trust in me--it is crucial for my well-being.
4. Don't be angry with me for long, and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment I HAVE ONLY YOU!
5. Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I under stand your voice when it's speaking to me..
6. Be aware that however you treat me, I'll NEVER forget it.
7. Before you hit me, remember that I have teeth that could crush the bones in your hand, but I choose not to bite you.
S. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I've been in the sun too long, or my heart may be getting old and weak.
9. Take care of me when I get old. You, too, will grow old.
10. Go with me on difficult journeys. Never say, "I can't bear to watch it" or, "Let it happen in my absence." Everything is easier for ME if you are there.
Remember, I love you.

To anyone thinking of making donations to Frisky's
Wildlife and Primate Sanctuary, please go through all
of your past Newsletters and your new ones also. If you
read carefully you will find that they make statements
and just a few lines or a paragraph below they will
change their first statement!! Anything to get your
dollars! I am "Jamie's" grandma, the Bonnet Macaque that
has been left at Frisky's until all court cases are
final. They state that he is now a lifer at Frisky's,
untrue, call animal control and ask them!! Call Frisky's
and see what they now say ,as Mrs Thomas from Animal Control has informed them that they are not to put out false infor-
mation about this case and "Jamie" still belongs to the
Ritterspachs. In one place they say that they have paid
over $2000 on "Jamie's vet bills, look down just a little
and it goes down to $1200, this is also untrue. The
true amount is less than $380.00!!!! My son has paid
the vet for his services to "Jamie"!!!!! He would not
send it to Frisky's as we have found we can not believe
a word they say or write!! The Vet will credit this
amount to Frisky's account, this means she has paid no
bills and he has cost her nothing!!! But, she has
raised donations using "Jamie's" story to play on peoples
sympathy!! She wants to keep him and is doing everything
she can to convince Animal Control that she is the best
place for "Jamie". No way, he is bonded to the Ritter-
spachs, they have carried him on their bodies for his
two years of life. He showered, ate and slept with one
of the members of his human troup where he has lived
since a couple of weeks old. Frisky's has at least 22
primates and can not give hime the care he is use too.
But, Colleen wants to keep him for her own selfish
reasons.
Another untruth that is very clear....She advertises ever
every month that they will take any primate, regardless
of age or condition and turn none away from Frisky's!!
Please read this months newsletter where it says that
they have turned away over ten times more than they have
accepted. Their words not mine. Her letters are full of
untruths!! Read them and see what I mean. She takes
exactly what appeals to her and goes out of her way to
keep the ones she wants, even if it means telling many
untruths. What ever it takes to get $ and Primates of
her liking. She did not ask for him to come there Animal
Control placed him there. Once she got him she has tried
to influence AnimalControl to let her keep him forever!
They are wise to her now and do not believe what she
says. She is only allowed to call them if it concerns
"Jamie's" health!!
Please E-mail Frisky's web-master and ask him to tell
Colleen to help to send "Jamie" back to his loving
parents where he is longing to be and they are longing
for his return!! Please help "Jamie" to return home!!
Thank you so very much!!

FRISKY' S SANCTUARY OUR GOAL
1. Frisky's will accept all animals regardless of physical or mental handicaps or problems.
2. Frisky's will provide the best care, medicine, and food to each critter and bird as soon as it arrives. To be sure to complete the paper work and pictures to have a record for each animal.
3. Frisky's will provide clean enclosures that are adequate and safe for each individual animal.
4. As soon as they are physically fit, Frisky's will:
A. Get the wildlife back to nature or to the State Park right away;
B. Get domestic animals into adoptive homes - Important note: no one can adopt or foster any domestic pet unless they have:
1) A vet 2) Experience 3) A drivers license that verifies identity.
5. You must have your heart in the right place, but more important your brains must be in gear to provide for each animal's individual needs.
A letter from Frisky's founder--Frisky's Sanctuary and Rescue has been my life since 1970 and I am proud of the care and love I have given to all of the critters that have come my way. It has been my mission to do all that I can to help animals. Someone recently compared me to St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint known for his kindness to animals. Those of you who know me well know that I am no saint! But I do feel that I have been put on this earth to care for God's hurt and helpless creatures. I had no idea when I first started taking in a few animals a month that someday the number would grow to 2,000! Yes, in 1998 we rescued almost 2,000 animals. I started out with an education in zoo life and backyard wildlife. This was a good start but not nearly broad enough to cover all of the challenges would face at Friskys. These days you need a degree in medicine, nutrition, child development, human behavior, ecology, law and business to run the sanctuary. Never mind the endless stream of paperwork including; documentation on each animal licenses, permits and inspections. The laws are constantly changing and with these changes comes a need to inform the public. For example, many people do not know that it is against the law to administer first aid to wildlife or to keep these animals in captivity. Other responsibilities include the need to keep up with our own health. The valued veterinarians, volunteers and I must not only take vitamins and avoid colds so as not to infect the animals, we must keep up our tetanus shots, rabies prevention shots and now Lyme disease prevention shots. of course most of you know that our number one priority is to let the public know that we are here for the animals. However, we need to have the materials on hand to carry out our mission. These materials are not just limited to food and cleaning supplies, they also include the need for electric, phone, insurance and propane gas for heat (especially in the case of a power shortage like we've had recently).
Many of you are personally familiar with Frisky's Sanctuary and Rescue work. You know that we do not charge for the services we provide. We do not believe in charging people for caring about animals and doing a good deed. We do welcome any help that you car provide to keep this place running. If you cannot personally make a financial donation, there are many other ways you can give to Frisky's. Perhaps you know of an individual or an organization that can contribute. You can provide items from our wish list, which is included in most of our newsletters. You can donate items for our annual garage sale, which is always held every weekend in April from 9-5. You can help with typing the newsletter or folding, stuffing and addressing. Postage is always appreciated. You can solicit pet food and grocery stores for donations of groceries, cleaning supplies, toys, etc. We can provide all donors with receipts for tax purposes. You can run ads in your local newspaper for the garage sale or ask for donations of used goods for the sale. Brad and Trouble

FRISKY'S Wildlife & Primate Sanctuary 10790 Old Frederick Rd.. - RT. 99 - Woodstock. MD 21163 part 3
What is a Sanctuary?
SANCTUARY: "A tract of land (Frisky's Sanctuary five acres) where wildlife can take refuge in safety from the human public."
ZOO: "A park or other large enclosure in which live animals are kept for public exhibition."
We're Very Sorry... But We Can't Have Tours or Visitors.
Occasionally; we have people ask to just see the animals. We really understand your desire and wish to oblige, but the animals are our of concern. Animals are brought here because of accidents, mistreatment, neglect, or because well meaning people just don't do their homework before acquiring a "pet." Basically, they are here because of the errs of humanity.
Except for Colleen, the manager, and a handful of well trained volunteers, most of these animals never see human beings and they are probably very happy about that!. Some of the animals are terrified lust to see a strange face others will attack a strange face that gets too close to their cage. Which is the other problem we need to think about--liability. Many animals are extremely fast, particularly the monkeys. They can strike you before you can blink your eye. You think you're out of reach but think again their arms are long and seem to grow longer when they want to grab or attack someone! Besides worrying about disease control; WE ARE A SANCTUARY, NOT A ZOO! We are here to care for and protect these animals, wild and domestic from any further dealings with human beings... for the rest of their lives. We are very sorry we cannot accommodate viewing of the animals. But for those who truly care about these animals, they will understand.
The Sanctuary is open to the public on Sundays between 1pm to 5pm to see the adoptable animals only! So if we must turn you away; please understand - its for the sake of the animals.
SANCTUARY GOALS
1. Will accept ALL WILDLIFE regardless of physical or mental handicaps or problems.
2. Will provide the best care, medicine, and food to each critter and bird as soon as it arrives and will complete a photo and file for each animal treated.
3. Will provide clean enclosures that are adequate and safe for each individual animal.
4. As soon as physically fit--will:
Release wildlife back to nature or to State Park
Prepare domestic animals for adoption to a good home.
IMPORTANT NOTE: no one can adopt a domestic pet unless they have:
(1) A veterinarian
(2) Experience
(3) A driver's license to verify identity.
5. You must have your heart in the right place, but more importantly you must have the know-how to provide for each animal's individual needs.

Important Tips On Saving Young Wild Lives
1. DO NOT TOUCH! If you must pick them up wear rubber gardening or winter gloves. KEEP THESE IMPORTANT FACTS IN MIND--These cute little animals could be carriers of LICE, PARASITES, FLEAS, LYME DISEASE & RABIES.
2. Put animal in a secure box or kennel cage. Keep shut. Keep personal pets away from rescued critter. Their adrenaline can't handle the fear.
3. KEEP WARM. Put box on top of a heating pad. Set heating pad at low. Temperature can be checked with any thermometer. It should be about 85 degree to 90 degree F.
4. Use grass or leaves for nesting - not clothes or towels. Clothes have your scent on them. Torn or shredded paper towels can be used.
5 Call- FRISKY'S WILDLIFE & PRIMATE SANCTUARY at 410-418-8899 or your local vet for advice and help. Wildlife in captivity is against Federal law. Fines are given all the time, even if you think you are only helping and doing the right thing. ANIMAL CONTROL LAWS SECTION 17.300 Animal Control Law with which all animal owners should be familiar. 10. Wild or exotic animals are not permitted as pets included in this category are the offspring of a domesticated animal bred with a wild or exotic animal.
6. If you can't reach FRISKY'S or the Vet immediately and you feel you must give something to help the critter from dehydrating or dying, boil water and when it is cooled, give with a plastic eye dropper. Start with only a few drops. If it is an infant and needs formula, it should have a special wildlife formula not sold to the public, but a few drops of human infant formula "with iron" can be given. KEEP IN MIND--wild animals only feed or nurse their young two to four times a day. Birds need much more often-every hour during daylight hours.
7. After feeding, place critter on your gloved open left hand. Hold firm enough to hold the critter still and stroke its back with right hand to get out any air or gas pockets to "burp".
8. Take a Q-tip cover it with Vaseline or Triple Antibiotic and gently stroke the anal area for 20 to 30 seconds to encourage bowel movement. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO Simulate BOWEL AND BLADDER MOVEMENT IN ORDER TO PREVENT BOWEL BLOCKAGE. Many animals die due to intestinal problems.
9. Then leave it ALONE until the next feeding. Keep in "Quite Area" keeping family and pets and friends away. Don't try to overfeed, feeding it will give the critter strength. The stress of new formula and handling will only decrease chances of survival and may cause diarrhea.
10. Bring your found orphan to: FRISKY'S WILDLIFE & PRIMATE SANCTUARY 10790 Old Frederick Road (Route 99) Woodstock, Maryland 21163 Phone: 410-418-8899 '"Anytime" Managers: Colleen Layton & Scott Robbins You will be kept updated on the progress of the orphaned critter; plus pictures.

Dearest Friends of Frisky's:
It was a strange feeling that swept over me at 3:30 am July 29th, 1998. I was awakened by infant Johnny (A Weeper Capuchin Monkey). He wanted his bottle. Often I get up during the night, just to check the animals and get Johnny his bottle, and yes, to go to the bathroom! As Johnny sat on my shoulder drinking his bottle, I made Mr. Bo Jangles a bottle of Ensure. Bo is a 12--year old Java Macaque Monkey who has diabetes and epilepsy.
As I was making Bo's bottle and getting his medicine, I was thinking how much I truly love caring for the monkeys, accepting and respecting each individual personality and health situation.
This particular morning my heart was filled with the need to see, hold and tell each monkey that all the time I spend with them is so very precious! To both of us.
With keys, bottle and Bo's medicine in hand I headed for Primate House #II. Upon entering, some woke up and wondered what had awakened them. I told each, "It's okay, it is just Mommy with Bo's bottle and medicine."
Martin, a Squirrel Monkey who has cancer, usually comes over for his own personal "kisses on the lips". He was laying on his shelf bed and not in his hammock. That was strange! I glanced up on the wall to check the big wall thermometer It was 72 degrees...not to warm or cool. I handed Bo his bottle, told him to drink it slow and that Mommy loves him bunches! Martin still didn't come over for his kisses! I quietly asked him, "Martin, are you asleep?" In the reflecting light of their TV (that is on 24- hours a day) I could see that his eyes were slightly open. I thought, he's
looking at me...then I got that dreaded feeling!
Fearful that my voice would upset the others. I quietly called, "Martin". Please God, No! Martin had died peacefully in his sleep. Nicole, Martin's wife, and son Squeeky came over to Martin's side and hugged him. OH, NO, NO, NO!! I grabbed a flashlight and looked again. Even though he had cancer, I thought he was doing so well!
With tears streaming and my heart in my throat, 1 went to wake Scott Robbins, the other Frisky's manager. That was easy because he has the dogs sleeping with him and they barked when I knocked on the door. I asked him to watch Johnny because Martin had died in his steep and I needed to go out with a baby blanket and remove him before the others figured out that he wasn't just sleeping.
Scott took Johnny and I grabbed a big baby blanket and went back to the monkey house. When I came back in a second time, the monkeys knew this was not normal. Something was wrong. I dried my eyes and unlocked Martin's enclosure. I picked him up and wrapped him in the baby blanket. Nicole came over and pulled the blanket off Martin's face. I think I told her, "he 's sleeping", so I didn't cover his face back up. She let me leave but had a look on her that I had never seen before. She watched me leave and went back to her son Squeeky.
Trying to make sure that my emotions didn't overwhelm me, I. locked the doors and checked the locks. This is hard, I can't stop crying. Scott reminds me that Martin was with his loving family and I should be happy that he died in his sleep. Even after he was diagnosed with cancer, he had good months. I loved him and he KNEW I loved him!
He will be missed by all who met him. Out of all the squirrel monkeys we 've had here, he was the sweetest, the most loving and most well behaved. I miss him so very much!!!

WHAT TICKS OFF MONKEYS!
(as it would us as well)
by Colleen Layton,
Getting too close as "IN YOUR FACE" or "STARING" when you don't even know each other.
Looking in their windows at them and their stuff.
Reaching out towards them-then jerking back.
Being near them and not saying "Hi!" or their name.
Not sharing what you are eating or drinking in front of them.
Letting them see something they want-but can't get to or have.
Touching, removing, or rearranging "THEIR STUFF"
Making any loud noise in "THEIR SPACE" or "AREA."
DON'T EVER FORGET (THEY WON'T) their memory is better than ours... and saying you are sorry - does not and will not change any wrong or any hurt!
ALWAYS REMEMBER they are natural, open and honest with their feelings and they read body language. And like us, can be grouchy when they are either hungry; bored, or need sleep.
MONKEY BEHAVIOR! by Colleen Layton
Monkeys behave like a two year old, a teenager, a husband and someone who suffers PMS all rolled up unto one!
Two year olds are fast and full of energy. They're into everything and always testing you!
Teenagers want their own way and will fight and disagree with you at the drop of a hat--especially if you try to control them! Sometimes they're "juvenile delinquents" and steal from you. If they do--it's theirs!
A husband wants to keep himself neat and clean but is sloppy with his things, food and surroundings--and then expects someone else to clean up after him--plus serve him his meals! Husbands always expect something from the kitchen, if you're coming back from there!
The PMS (Primitive Mood Swings) come with no warning, like this menopause I'm going through--sweet and nice, then bite your head or hand off, then come back apologizing'.?!

AN INTERVIEW WITH FRISKY'S SANCTUARY MANAGER, COLLEEN LAYTON by Mary Beth Barton
1. How come you can have monkeys and other people can't?
Colleen laughs and says this is the question I an asked most. I personally do not have these monkeys. I believe they have me. I am their maid, waitress, nutritionist, and whipping post. Some of them really can and do become physical with me. They will pull my hair and bite if given the chance. Mostly I am the provider of their care and needs. I do not own them; I have been educated in the care and welfare of them, which is my life. Frisky's is a Sanctuary; the monkey live here--it is a place of refuge away from mankind.
2. Is it fun working with all the animal?
Yes, sometimes it is fun but mostly it is a lot of worry and responsibility that caring for them brings. It is really a lot of hard work. It does make me smile when they are all happy and playing and doing well. Even the llama loves to gallop around the pasture.
3. How long have you been working with them?
It seems as though I have been working and caring for animals most of my life. I have always had pets, but I started Frisky's and saving lives in 1970.
4. What would you say is the most interesting animal you have ever had?
Good question. I would have to say Black Bear cubs, baby Raccoons, Rhesus Macaque monkeys. It was interesting in learning their behavior patterns and nutritional needs. I suppose monkeys are the most interesting, because they get bored very easy; so figuring out ways to keep them occupied is an interesting challenge.
5. How many monkey's have you hand raised like Johnny and Gizmo?
Infant care for monkeys is a twenty four hour job, so it is easy for me to remember how many I have cared for. My first was Gizmo, a male Rhesus Macaque monkey. His mother rejected him at birth. He was my first infant in 1989. My second was Babee, a female Weeper Capuchin monkey. Her mother suffered severe bleeding and had to have a hysterectomy which left her fighting for her own life and too weak to care for her newborn baby. Then there is Scotty Jr. a male Vervet Guenon monkey. An elder man who had a colony of Vervets was worried about the welfare of his monkeys if he should die. So he wanted the baby monkey placed at Frisky's Sanctuary as a "lifer" to prevent his sale to a research lab or zoo. Scotty came to us in 1995. Babee and Scotty Jr's birthdays are only ten days apart. I carried them on me for one and a half years. I must say I lost a lot of hair from their constant pulling. And last but not least there is Johnny; a male Weeper Capuchin monkey. Johnny was one of a set of twins. Overwhelming his mother since it was her first time at motherhood ,Johnny was also rejected by his mother. As you can see I still carry Johnny on me. Johnny was born on July 6,1997.
6 Why did you choose to do this kind of work?
I am not sure I did choose this work, and work it is. I think it chose me. When I first started saving wildlife I studied and took classes in Backyard Wildlife and Wildlife Biology I wanted to make sure that what I was doing would be everything I could possibly do. I found it was very rewarding when I was able to save a life. I also tried to learn why one would die and others lived. Wildlife biology and behaviors are never ending studies. The more lives I became responsible for the more involved I became, and gradually it became my life.

AN INTERVIEW WITH FRISKY'S SANCTUARY MANAGER, COLLEEN LAYTON by Mary Beth Barton
7. How did you get started doing this?
That is another good question. I am also asked this question a lot. A neighbor's dog had invaded a nest of baby bunnies in her back yard. The mother rabbit was badly wounded. My neighbor asked what to do so I started caring for the baby bunnies. I lived close to the railroad tacks, which I loved to hike on. Finding wounded animals was not uncommon. However helping these animals was part of the common gossip. I was a young wife and mother. My husband was in the Marines for four years. He did two tours of duty in Vietnam. I was raising two sons all alone. So the bunnies, birds, fawns, raccoons and even a baby bear cub were brought into our home. They would be cared for and when able released back into their natural environments and not kept as pets.
8. Who do you get your animals from?
The animals come from farms, yard and tree services, even pool services have bought in squirrels, chipmunks, bunnies, and birds rescued from swimming pools. A large number of wildlife is rescued from the jaws of local dogs and cats. Also out of dumpsters or even off the ground after being knocked out of their tree nests during a gusty storm. Hundreds of baby bunnies come in every year because someone mowing his lawn disturbed their nest.
9. What kinds of animals do you have here generally?
There are always monkeys. To be exact there are seventeen of them. They are the "lifers." They will live here always. There are squirrels, rabbits, chipmunks, opossums, and a variety of birds, and of course farm animals such as chickens, ducks, geese, and goats. Then there are domestics such as dogs and cats. We also have exotics, such as ferrets, a llama, turtles and seagulls.
10. Is this a medical facility for rescued wildlife?
That is exactly what Frisky's is--a sanctuary or refuge for them to recover. Not a zoo. It is a peaceable kingdom. It is usually nice and quite, except at feeding time.
11. Have there been any major or fatal fights between the animals?
Yes, we have had fights. Fatal, well I think once with a couple dwarfs white Russian hamsters, but] am not positive about that. Major they do happen from time to time, but we do have video and sound surveillance, so any fights are broken up quickly.
12. Why can 't people just come and look around?
Because this is a sanctuary a place for rest. It is not a zoo. It is a medical facility a place for healing. Most animals need peace and quite with no disruption. Stress can do harm; for instance some monkeys cannot handle a commotion. One of our monkeys is an epileptic, another has cancer, two are diabetics, and two others have liver problems. These are just some of the monkey's problems. Also a lot of the animals and monkeys are very dangerous. Why take the chance--when we live in the land of I'll sue you?
13. Is there any limit for pet adoptions by one person?
We use to have just one per family; but lately we do more. We have found that some families can provide the love and attention as well as provide for their many needs.

AN INTERVIEW WITH FRISKY'S SANCTUARY MANAGER, COLLEEN LAYTON by Mary Beth Barton
14. Do you feel you can really understand the animal's thoughts and feelings?
Sometimes, yes. I put myself in their place and keeping in mind our five senses, I try' to keep life, sounds, smells and familiar to each animal. Change upsets all of us, whether it better or worse.
15. Just how unpredictable are the animals?
Animals are very unpredictable. That is why we always have to stay alert and never use jerky movements or loud voices. By doing so we can keep Frisky's a frisky but peaceable kingdom. If an animal is injured or in pain they can be dangerous and unpredictable. Humans are that way too.
16. Do you ever feel like saying "forget it" and give up?
Not in years though... I used to.... One of my sons is handicapped and would need so much from me, that I would sometimes feel that he 'wits being neglected... or I'd sometimes I would wonder what it would be like to have a romance and relationship with a man.
Sometimes I feel there are too few places that animals and monkeys can find help and refuge. Or just straight out wish I could get the HELP and FINANCES that would make this struggle to SAVE and CARE easier.
17. How long does it take for a new monkey to trust you?
For me usually not long. However; there are still a few that have been here for a year that I cannot hold or even touch. Some bond right away and others do not. I always spend several nights on a cot next to their enclosure after their arrival. I never change their names and I only make nutritional changes in their diet so that they get the best nutrition possible.
18. Is there evident hierarchy between you and the animal?
Yes, with a few. We all have our own personalities which must be accepted by others from time to time.
19. Do you think the animals enjoy the sanctuary?
Yes, I do. I try very hard to do just that. And believe me it takes a lot of hard work to provide a comfortable and nutritional home along with enrichment. For example raccoons like hollow logs, monkeys like baby and parrot toys, ferrets like hammocks and cat toys, cats like balls and toys, dogs like chew bones, and goats like to climb on dog igloo houses.
20. Do you take volunteers?
Yes, those that are sincere in working for the animals' welfare. Hands on handling is rare. However, if a rabies shoot is acquired from the health department, handling of the animals is a possibility. Once they find out it involves a lot of cleaning, they change their minds. My son says Frisky's is a fertilizer-making farm.
21. Do you hire people for paying jobs?
Once in a great while. If we need an electrician or plumber or a bricklayer. These are jobs that Scott Robbins, the other manager at Frisky's and I cannot do.
22. Do you except monetary donation?
OH Yes! Whenever they are offered. We only started taking monetary donations when we became a registered nonprofit organization. We never receive any pay whatsoever. All donations go to the animals and the monkey's welfare. And I will NEVER have it any other way.

AN INTERVIEW WITH FRISKY'S SANCTUARY MANAGER, COLLEEN LAYTON by Mary Beth Barton
23. Do yore ever get horses?
Yes, once in a while there are special cases that need quiet and or special diets. Some need constant medications like the horse that was stabbed deeply several times with a pitch fort. He needed large doses of penicillin several limes a day and lots of rest.
24. What happens to the wildlife after they are better?
All wildlife is returned to their natural environment. Most go to Maryland's Patapsco State Park.
25. Are there any improvements you would like to make at the sanctuary?
OH YES! Bigger; better enclosures, and big outside cages with concrete floors. We desperately need to build another monkey house, which will house the large Macaque monkeys. We have been trying hard to raise the fourteen thousand dollars to do it, but it is taking time. We will have garage sales every weekend starting in April on Saturdays and Sunday's 9-5 pm. I am hoping this will be our biggest success.
26. Are donations tax deductible?
Yes they are. We are incorporated and registered; a non profit organization. Anyone who makes a donation will get a receipt.
27. Do you take animals that are healthy but unwanted?
Yes. For instance we have cockatiels, ferrets, rabbits, turtles, guinea pigs, hamsters, goats, pigeons, and even a llama just to name just a few.
28. How much does it cost to run something like this?
It takes well over fifty thousand dollars per year and the bills and costs constantly go up. We try hard to cut corners and we do without. It is hard to make do when it is all for their welfare. We spend two hundred and fifty dollars a week just on monkey groceries.
29. Do you ever get to go on vacation?
NO, NO VACATIONS... which upsets a lot of my relatives that live across the United States. It is hard for them to visit me too with all the dangerous animals here or just my being too busy to visit. My son Rick moved from Savage to Sykesville, Maryland, almost a year ago and I still have riot seen his apartment. He visits me because I need to see my grandson who is four and a half years old and growing very quickly
30. What chores do you do mostly?
Well there is a ton of cleaning, laundry, dishes, and shoveling to do. I mostly CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN.
31 How many cages do you have to clean a day?
Several dozen. There are monkey cages, ferret cages, rabbit cages, cat cages, chicken cages, etc. I could go on and on.
32. Do you clean every cage every day?
No, I would like to but I can't. Usually every few days. For the monkeys you do surface cleaning daily and change the bedding. This takes about twenty minutes per day per cage.

Dear Colleen,
With my mentorship program at Frisky's coming to an end, I have been reflecting on the invaluable experiences you have provided me.You have always made yourself available to answer my many questions and have offered me guidance as I gained experience in primate care.
I have grown to love my time at Frisky's and the opprotunity to get to know the animals. Dealing with the death of animals was a new experience for me and I feel I grew a great deal as I became better able to manage difficult situations. It didn't take me long to realize that caring for monkeys is not an easy task. I have learned to control my impulsive sudden movements and recognize that monkeys do not respond well to surprise. I have gotten my most enjoyment out of watching Angel grow and than mature. The most rewarding experiences for me were when I had the opportunity to present my mentorship at Frisky's to parents and middle school students. It is my hope that I may have inspired other students to pursue a mentor program. Colleen, you have taught me that getting more enjoyment out of life means loving, caring, and sharing- accepting and wanting to carry out responsibilities with enthusiasm and pleasure.
Memories of Frisky's will flood me as I bury myself in college next year. The experience has reinforced my desire to work with animals and possibly pursue a career in veterinary medicine. Frisky's will always be in my heart. I expect to be spending a lot of hours with you and the monkeys this summer. You have been a true mentor and role model for me. Your dedication to the animals and their care has inspired me. I am amazed by your special ability to interact with the monkeys and gain their trust. I hope your door will , always be open so that I can visit and reacquaint myself with the animals. Thank you for being my mentor and giving me this wonderful opportunity to learn about primate care.

Volunteer of the Year
The only bad thing I can say about Sandy Davison is that her taste in monkeys leaves something to be desired. She can't help it if she Johnny is cuter than Angel. The woman just doesn't know any better.
What this woman does know is how how to run a garage sale like a professional! Thanks to Sandy's untiring efforts, Frisky's had their best sale ever. No one quite knows where Sandy found the time or energy to devote to Frisky's over these past few nonths. She has a full time job with the government, two daughters, a husband, and a mother to care for at home. She is actively involved with her church, and volunteers time at a pregnancy clinic. So how did she manage to coordinate donations, log and price items, label sale items for display, and then participate in the sale each weekend? It must have been divine intervention.
When most of us think about having garage sale, we think about lugging our old junk up from the basement, slapping a cheap price on it and setting it out front. This was not the Davison method. Sandy researched almost every item that was donated by getting on the internet, talking to antique dealers, and going to the library. Of course she had good reason to investigate pricing in this way, most of the donations Frisky's receives are not junk! Thanks to generous friends, neighbors, and supporters, Sandy was faced with the dilemma of how to price a rare signed and numbered print, what to charge for rare hand painted Limoges plates, and most difficult of all, how to entice people to buy Scott's beloved garden gnomes!
It should be noted that commitment and generosity is a Davison family trait. Sandy's husband, two daughters, and sister in law contributed time and money to the yard sale. Most notable is daughter Kelly' a regular volunteer at Frisky's who was willing to babysit that cute and lively monkey, Angel, during the yard sale. Kelly is a rare teenager who gives up her time to enrich the lives of the animals at Frisky's. She has patience, maturity, and creativity, all of the things it takes to do great things in life!
The sale brought in over $6000. The proceeds will be used to care for the animals and to maintain the sanctuary. Thanks Sandy, it couldn't have been done without you.
Thanks also go out to Mandy! She canvassed her neighborhood and came up with the majority of valuable donations. She even got her boyfriend's family to donate! Thanks for your untiring collection of donations Mandy.

LETTERS
To whom it may concern,
This is a letter to Frisky's Wildlife & Primate Sanctuary in regards to the 2 year old monkey Jamie:
With me being a monkey owner myself, I understand the hurt that Jamie's owners may be feeling, but also know that Jamie is in good hands at Frisky's Sanctuary. I personally have had an excruciating experience involving one of my monkeys and Colleen was there for me with the experience and knowledge that I needed for what I was going through. This is how I know that Colleen is a very caring person when it comes to any animal, especially the monkeys. Colleen's heart goes out for any monkey as though they were her own. At Frisky's, the monkeys can do no wrong!!
I have a 3 year old capuchin monkey that often boards at Frisky's and never have there been any problems. The monkeys at Frisky's are clean, healthy, and very well fed. They are separated from boarders or newcomers to avoid any problems and Colleen has had years of experience and , knowledge in almost every breed. The Sanctuary is several acres of land so the monkeys, as well as the other animals, have more than enough space provided for their needs. I hope that Jamie can be returned to his Owners, the Ritterspachs, but if he has to stay with Colleen at Frisky's, I know that he will be taken care of and be placed around other monkeys of his breed as well as enough toys, love, space and attention than he could possible desire.
Sincerely yours,
Lisa McMurray
Hi, my name is Amber Wilson, and I have to do 8 hours of community service at Frisky's Wildlife Center. My first thought of Frisky's was that I would be going to this smelly, unkept, pet center. When I arrived I was highly surprised, and impressed by the atmosphere and the animals. It's amazing how much trust animals can put in their care takers. Today I learned mostly about the monkeys. I met a monkey today named Scottie. Scottie is from Africa and literally has blue balls! looked pretty wild to me.
Angel was another monkey that I met today, and boy is she a hand full. She jumped all over me without me even getting a chance to introduce myself. Angel would look down my shirt, pull on my bottom lip, and go through my purse. I learned that Angel is an independent and very smart monkey. I enjoy monkeys because they are fun, and are incredibly similar to humans. They respond the same way as humans do to everyday things. I'm also very happy to see someone like Colleen taking the time and effort to take care of these wonderful animals. She has my utmost respect, and I just met her today! Colleen is an amazing woman. Thanks Colleen for letting me into your Frisky Wildlife!
Sincerely,
Amber Wilson

Panel upholds monkey decision Pet accused in attacks to stay at refuge
By TaNoah Morgan
A pet monkey accused of biting or scratching more than a half-dozen people over two years will have to remain at the Howard county refuge where it has been since spring
After hearing seven hours of testimony yesterday, the Anne Arundel County Animal Control Commission, a seven-member administrative review panel, decided that animal control officers were right to take Jamie, a 2-year-old Bonnett macaque, from owners Steven and Kimberly Ritterspach of Glen Burnie after the animal was involved in a barroom brawl in April.
The six commission members at yesterday's hearing said animal administrator Tahira Shane Thomas will have to decide where the monkey will be placed permanently and whether the family can visit.
The Ritterspachs, who have come to regard the monkey as the child they could not have, said they planned to appeal.
"I'm not giving up at this point," said Steven Ritterspach, 45, owner of a used-car dealership. "We've spent enough now for three monkeys. But that's not what this is about -- it's about the bond that was between us."
Ritterspach said the couple had spent $13,000 in lawyer fees to try to get Jamie back.

Letters
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
I am writing this letter in regards to the Bonnet Macaque, Jamie, placed at Frisky's Wildlife and Primate Sanctuary. Given the history of this monkey I strongly believe this is the best home possible for him. I too have a macaque that I voluntarily placed at Frisky's . The reason I chose Frisky's was the love and dedication Colleen has for these animals and the excellent vet care that Dr. Cranfield and Dr. Jacques provide to her monkeys. Colleen has welcomed me into her home when I come out to visit my boy and she done everything possible to help him adjust to his new environment.
I know that even with Jamie s history of biting that Colleen could give this little guy a good life and would strongly recommend you place Jamie with her permanently. Do not punish this animal because of his uneducated and somewhat careless owners. These animals bite when they are taken out of their familiar environment and when strange people are around them they tend to become very, insecure and defend themselves the only way they know how. How would you feel if a stranger came up to you and got in your face? I believe that Jamie would he less aggressive if he was in a stable-loving environment where his nutritional, psychological and emotional needs could be met. Colleen knows how to detect these things and would provide anything that he needed to make him happy. I have seen her do this with my boy and the other monkey's at the sanctuary. Please allow this monkey to have a safe and happy life and consider my recommendation.
Sincerely,
Monti M. Most

Dear Jean,
My husband and I are very busy since we do 99% of the work here, and it's a lot of work. But I felt I should respond to your very unsettling letter.
Our friends, family, neighbors, and volunteers can only say, "How dare you? You don't know us. You've never met us. You've never been here." But what I say does not come to you by secondhand rumors or the gossip channels of the Internet or two very unfortunate people who are very upset over the loss of their ownership of their monkey.
Setting the Record Straight
At my age I really shouldn't care what anyone else thinks (knowing you can't please everybody). To you or anyone else it should be enough just knowing that I am doing the very best I possibly can for the wildlife and primates that are brought into Frisky's--each and every one of them. Pointedly, you don't know us. We are in no form thieves!
Actions Speak Louder...
I truly do love and respect our land and its animals, and I have real pride and high standards of care for the animals and their enclosures. (Anyone who has been here will testify to that.) I do the work for, and only for, the wildlife and primates here... and whatever else is brought here. My husband is a welder for Riggs Distler--sub-contractors of Baltimore Gas & Electric. He earns $20. an hour and puts it all towards the Sanctuary bills--all of it! That's because we really don't get funding from anywhere else. Our goals are for animal welfare. There is no ulterior motive for the caring and the doing. I am very cautious in how I spend every penny here, not just the donations. Just think about what you are accusing Frisky's of. We do not go about putting ads in newspapers asking for animals. And we publish in our newsletters stories about our friends who have made large donations. If we had anything to hide, would we publish it in the newsletters that are seen by people in over 7,000 homes? Most donations are made from our good, long-standing friends and those who've helped out. Some are made by those who want to help in the only way they can. Sure, money is spent wisely, and only on what is absolutely needed. Even my husband would tell you that the animals get bigger and better meals, and are fed first. Bedding is changed daily and every monkey gets at least one complete physical once a year. I've always prided myself on our monkeys. Apparently you've been misinformed, or you wouldn't be trying to crucify honest, hard-working people. I've created and managed Frisky's only so I could do something for the animals. Instead of looking at the negatives, we try to see all the positives of the caring and doing. You ought to look into Frisky's more closely, and you will doubtlessly see that there is no rich lady here! Actually, there's a humble, poor woman wearing the hand-me-downs from friends and family who donated those clothes because they know every cent here is spent on the animals. I spend zero (0) money on myself. No beauty parlors (or are they called hair salons these days?), no makeup, no fancy car, no vacations, no carpeting or drapes. No jewelry, nice dishes, or silverware, either. (By the way, there's no air conditioning, either!) I sleep on a sofa that I've had since 1976(!) with two monkeys. Not with my poor, hard-working husband. As a matter of fact, we hardly have any furniture at all.

I do all my run-around chores in less than three hours once a week. That's the only time I ever leave the sanctuary. You could even ask the neighbors, volunteers, friends, or family of Frisky's who have ever been here.
I've often said that if I won a million dollars I would still spend every bit of it on the critters at Frisky s. I can prove how well these animals are cared for, and I challenge anybody to try and prove otherwise. As for baby monkeys We have taken in a total of six (6) baby monkeys that have come our way in 30 years. And those that come in have real problems. The guenon you mentioned, Angel, is here only because her mother rejected her and they asked us to take her in. I DID NOT steal or buy any of them. All but one were saved and are still here (the one that died came in with severe pneumonia and died within hours). We've turned away 10 times the monkeys we've taken in only because we want the very best for each and every one that comes here.
Did you know we did not become a non-profit organization until 6/11/97? And we did not receive any public money until that fall of 1997? I have a very high standard about doing things right. We mostly depend on ourselves financially because we get few funds from the public and absolutely ZERO funds from county, state, or federal government. That's why we have the garage sales. Heck, we even grow our own vegetable garden and we have a variety of fruit trees on our property.
Jamie:
Anne Arundel County Animal Control called and asked us to take in Jamie. I am NOT DOING ANYTHING ILLEGAL!!! No... Animal Control did not want to put Jamie to sleep. That was why they went to the Baltimore Zoo and asked them for advice. What could they do? That was when he was placed at Frisky's, because of our knowledge, facilities, security, and mostly our reputation, which is excellent. As of today's date (7/10/1999) I have received no money-I repeat, NO MONEY-for Jamie. But we sure have paid-well over $1,000 just to the vet for his required tests. Do you want a copy of his bills? They were very reasonable. We did receive some toys from Jimmi and Monte Most, who had placed their Rhesus Macaque monkey here.
The Ritterspaches, the former owners of Jamie, although their anger is perfectly understandable, are being unjustifiable in their attacking of Frisky's. When Jamie made news, radio, television, and newspapers, I never once said anything against the Ritterspaches. Each spent several hours here (all on our audio/video surveillance). When asked my opinion I told each one that I wasn't trying the case. I'm just a sanctuary, and I'm here to take in and care for the critters, any way that's needed. Never once did I mention all the money that he cost the Sanctuary and never once did I mention - that we are a non-profit organization. I didn't make a public appeal for donations to collect the money we spent on Jamie. Did you read all the newspaper articles? Did you see all the news broadcasts?

Did you know there is no County-run Animal Control facility that wants to take on the responsibility of the care and expenses of quarantining a primate, especially a Macaque monkey? Not even for 30 days until a legal decision is made. Are you aware of Jamie's 2-year history and all he went through just because the Ritterspaches insisted they could do what they want with their monkey? Dozens of people have since contacted Animal Control to tell them of their own surprise-attacks from Jamie. You know, if those bite-victims wanted to discover the results of Jamie's health tests immediately, without going and waiting through 30 traumatizing days and nights, they could have insisted on it and his permanent demise. Remember that this is the land of "I'll sue you if I'm upset because of my own negligence."
I've tried before to save the lives of monkeys that have bitten or scratched someone, and I've even tried to place them here or at home until the test results OR legal decisions were made. But the victims insisted on immediate results. Now, we have the monkeys in two parts, buried in our graveyard. A Macaque monkey stands little chance of survival once he has bitten someone. You do know of their zoonosis diseases? Everybody involved only did his or her job, The Ritterspaches were the ones who didn't own up to their own mistakes and wrongdoings--being very difficult, threatening practically everybody involved--even us. (On the circumstance that you don't believe this, we have video surveillance tapes to prove this.)
It was my idea to let them visit Jamie after his quarantine, but they kept giving me such a hard time about every little thing that Animal Control and the lawyers put an end to the visits. Look, all in all, the Ritterspaches screwed up, and they know they did, and I feel very sorry for them. But mostly, I feel for Jamie. The hurting and loss on both sides is overwhelming. During the first several weeks I tried to console the Ritterspaches... sending over (through volunteers and mail) pictures and old newsletters of Frisky's and pictures of Jamie, so they could rest assured about how well he was doing, about his play, meals, and vet visits.
I was told in the very beginning that no one was to know where he was and that I was not to talk to them. But I did. That was my mistake. Then the Ritterspaches turned on Frisky's. Even after all we did for Jamie and for them! I told them they could contact: (to name a few)
The Baltimore Zoo
The vets
Monkey Matters
Simian Society
But no, they told all who would listen to a one-sided story that I was trying to steal Jamie and that I was using Jamie to raise extra funds! I couldn't believe it! Then they threatened to dose us down, no matter what it took, and to have our county, state, and federal funding stopped.
Well, that's a joke! We don't get funding from any county, state, or federal grants, or otherwise! And as for closing Frisky's down... After thirty years of helping thousands of animals and people each year, there's no way we're going to be shut down!

My husband was so very upset with me for being nice to such unreasonable people who had me crying and losing sleep... because of their angry and menacing calls. Especially when I have so many OTHER monkeys and animals to care for, not just Jamie.
You are so very very wrong. I do love these monkeys, every single individual. You told me to send Jamie back to the Ritterspaches, but I don't need and I can't afford any trouble. You see, it's not my decision to make. He was placed here by Animal Control. I did not "go get him" or ask for him. Besides, Animal Control is part of the Police Department, or did you not know this? You want me to go against the law? Jamie is and will continue to be well cared for here at Frisky's Sanctuary, as well as to be loved and have all his needs met.
This is a true honest-to-God Sanctuary. Please understand I did not screw up; that would be the Ritterspaches, not just once, but several times (which really does make me feel truly sorry for them). I am here caring for Jamie and I always will be, for him and for others if I'm needed! I did not take Jamie and I'm not here to grudge about what happened before or how wrong the Ritterspaches may or may not have been. I have no ulterior motives for the caring and the doing. Do you really think there's something in it for me, personally or financially, to take in those who need Frisky's? I believe I can make a difference and I really do care. I'm not out to cause trouble for anyone or any animal. I am no liar nor am I a thief. We are just doing our best to make ends meet. The Ritterspaches can do as they like. Anybody can investigate Frisky's and/or myself. I have got nothing to hide and never will nor will I do anything wrong. It's a shame and I'm sorry that Jamie can't go home but it's not my fault. (By the way, I AM NOT asking you for your support or sympathy of Frisky's in any way... just for your open mind. We've managed very well for 30 years without anybody else's money.) Frisky's supporters know that we're here for the animals.
Before you pass judgement, it's wise for you to have ALL the facts, stories, and points of view from both sides. From here you can decide what your opinion is with a little more knowledge. Maybe someday you'd like to visit us, and you can see for yourself how well they are truly cared for and loved. Talk to someone who knows us! Life is God's gift and not meant to be wasted, and we're not wasting ours. The Lord knows of our dedication and devotion. I've got four cheeks and I'll just keep rotating for those who feel they must slap me around. But note: Every action has a reaction. Not even the Ritterspaches, you, or anyone else who was fed a one-sided story will stop me from caring and doing all I can for our wildlife.

To Whom It May Concern
My Name Is Shirley Mellor. I've been a contributor to Frisky's Wildlife and Primate Sanctuary for a couple of years. I first became involved by attending an annual fund raiser here at the Sanctuary every weekend in April. I soon got my husband and my daughter involved too. We soon saw a need to help out in anyway we could. Colleen Layton and Scott Robbins, her husband, were stretched to the limits in every way physically and financially. Scott and Colleen both gave everything they have to the animals for their welfare. Colleen uses Dial soap to wash her hair which needs to be done every day due to her interaction with the animals. Scott does without the basics for the animals.
Their day starts off with the treatment and care of the animals, and their day ends the same way. They do this 7 days a week and even on holidays. Scott works a regular job also. I had never spent anytime around primates before, to see the love and care that they are given by Colleen and Scott is something wonderful to see. Colleen deals out hugs and kisses to all the animals. They are all very happy and well taken care of. God willing she will continue to take care of them as long as she lives. I don't like to think of the alternative. Where would the animals be without them?
In late spring a monkey named Jamie was brought to the sanctuary by Anne Arundel Animal Control. He had on a dirty diaper, dirty T-shirt, and was scared to death. Today he is happy and healthy, thanks to Colleen. She neither needed or wanted another monkey but out of the kind of her heart she took him in. She has had to spend a lot of money on him to have him checked out at the vet with tons testing snd shots. Money they had saved for the outside cages for the other monkeys was used on Jamie. They are finally getting some of work done. Yet, another job for Scott. It is with great joy that we do what we can. We only wish we could do more.
Sincerely,
Shirley and Ken Mellor

Couple is pining for their monkey
Pet: A Glen Burnie couple who treat their pet like a child hope to get it back after it was taken into animal control custody for several biting incidents.
By TaNoah Morgan
SUN STAFF
A monkey walks into a bar
That's no joke to Steven and Kimberly Ritterspach of Glen Burnie, whose pet Bonnett macaque, Jamie, a repeat-biter, recently touched off a barroom brawl.
On May 11, a District Court judge will decide whether the 9-pound monkey returns to the custody of the couple that raised it like their child, or is sentenced to life in a Howard County refuge.
Since the bar incident almost three weeks ago, the 2-year-old primate has been in solation at Frisky's Wildlife; I s
and Primate Refuge and Primate Refuge in Woodstock.
Anne Arundel County's animal control department says Jamie should stay there. But the Ritterspachs say the department has wrongfully detained their monkey.
Some animal lovers familiar with primate behavior say keeping Jamie from the humans who raised him is harmful. Other experts say nothing is better for the animal than being with other
macaques, and the refuge has seven.
While Jamie has not inflicted serious damage he's sent seven people to local doctors with bites and scratches.
The public "should not be exposed to the potential of danger just because the owner has it out in public and the monkey bites at will," says Tahira Shane Thomas animal control administrator.
Not just a pet
The Ritterspachs have not regarded Jamie as just a pet. Since 1996, Mrs. Ritterspach, 32, has given birth prematurely to three babies--a girl and two boys--who died within weeks. They bought Jamie for $3,777 from Exotic Adoptions in New Jersey in 1997 a year after their first daughter died at 57 days old.
This is the closest thing to a child we could have," Mr. Ritterspach said.
After watching a daughter so fragile she couldn't be touched die, the sight of a baby animal
clinging to his wife moved him, he said.
They dressed the monkey in tiny diapers, punching holes in the seat with a thumb for its tail. Mrs. Ritterspach would nestle the infant in a sling 24 hours a day. She changed the monkey's diaper 10 times a day. dressed it in baby in sleepers, and filled a nursery with cat hotels, poles, nets and toys. The animal cuddled in the bed at night between the couple. A kid couldn't ask for a better life than we provide for this monkey,'' Mr. Ritterspach said.

Biting from the beginning
Still, trouble happened from the start. When the monkey was 3 months old, it bit a 8-year-old Pasadena girl who tried to pet him during a trip with Mr. Ritterspach to the Earleigh Heights carnival. Less than year later, he bit a 12-year-old.
"The majority of these incidents, if the victims were honest with themselves, they would say, ęGeez, we had warning.' It has never been life-threatening to anyone," Mr Ritterspach said.
Not so, said Jay Mapp, the Baltimore Zoos senior primate keeper. Even a nip from a macaque can be serous.
Their teeth are "longer and larger than a German shepherd's. They're like daggers," he said. Macaques also can carry herpes B, a deadly virus that has no cure.
After Jamie bit a family friend in September and a woman outside her Pasadena barbershop in November, animal control declared the monkey dangerous and ordered it restricted from public contact.
After another biting episode, animal control fined the Ritterspachs $100. When an animal control officer saw the monkey at Mr. Ritterspach's used-car lot in Pasadena in February, the officer took the monkey into custody and issued a $260 fine.
Brawl at bar
Then came the brawl April 2. Depressed by the death of their third baby two weeks earlier, the couple went to a birthday party for a friend at a local bar. They took Jamie on a leash. Then they stopped by the Speak-Easy-Inn in Glen Burnie, where a woman blew kisses at Jamie. He bit her on the lip.
The mix of the screaming woman, her boyfriend and a frantic monkey in a crowded bar late at night erupted into brawl that spilled into a back alley. Jamie bit two more people. Police used pepper spay to subdue Mr. Ritterspach, who was charged with assault, reckless endangerment and resisting arrest.
Animal control seized Jamie and fined the Ritterspachs $500.
Mr. Ritterspach acknowledges he was wrong to take Jamie out, and says that if they get the monkey back, they'll never do it again.
"The only thing I can do is say if we can just get our child back, the monkey will never be in public again," he said. "Nothing is worth what our family is going through."

The letter from Jean that Colleen Lawton referred to, I found today. I realized seeing her full name and address, which I'll won't share with you, that I have talked with this women on the phone last year when trying to start a SSA chapter and she didn't have a favorable opinion of past SSA ministrations but she did say to me she did not know John or Lu Hall or how SSA was being run at the present time. She wrote this letter to Colleen on June 16, 1999 well after my conversation with her. I'm adding this to make a point that any reference to SSA present operation she might be making is not based on any fact that I know of and it doesn't make sense her referring that the Simian Society could have the power to pull and hide court documents. We (being that I'm a member of SSA) do not to my knowledge have the political clout to do such a thing.
Part 1
Dear Colleen,
Running a sanctuary can make you a very rich lady, as long as you don't get caught spending money on your own wants and needs. But then---who is ever going to find out? That is what one man in Texas thought. This man had the Simian Society covering for him. He fleeced the public for years. He cleaned the bank accounts of at least two old ladies. Then the Attorney General got wind of him and his little racket. The Simian Society could not protect him from the law suit, brought by the state of Texas. An animal rights group had their eye on this man for animal abuse, for some time. Too many monkeys were showing up missing and the thirty monkeys he had hidden in a dirty shed out back brought the whole thing full circle! His help asked to clean the poor monkeys---who by then were up to their knees in their own waste. When he refused the help, they went to his office and turned his files over to the Attorney General. He had been spending public funds on himself for some time. Trips and hotels---expensive meals---a big car to meet him at the airport---etc. So what could he do? The only thing a dishonest sanctuary owner could do. He hired a group of corrupt lawyers to keep the case from ever going to trial. He then added insult to injury---he spent $10,000.00 of public funds to cover his past crimes. The Simian Society know----your friend Cliff Lewis has been collecting the court papers for some time now, so that people cannot read what this man did. I am sure if you ask Mr. Lewis he may show you the court documents---so that you can see what can happen to sanctuary owners who spend public funds, that is given in good faith, by well meaning people who believe you when you send them your newsletter.
The fact is---these animals don't NEED YOU AS MUCH AS YOU NEED THEM! Because without the animals you would have to find an honest job and do the nine to five thing, that most people do every day. You may be able to fool people who do not know monkeys---but I have been looking at monkeys since 1964 and I know an infant monkey, that has been taken from the mother too soon. And your newsletter has a lot of infant monkeys in it! The guenon you, so proudly printed---sucking his fingers, is too young to be off his mothers body. I get Animal Finders Guide and a baby Guenon is selling for around three to four thousand, on today's market and I know you don't have that kind of money, without dipping into public funds.

the monkey into custody and issued a $260 fine.
Brawl at bar
Then came the brawl April 2. Depressed by the death of their third baby two weeks earlier, the
couple went to a birthday party for a friend at a local bar. They took Jamie on a leash. Then they
stopped by the Speak-Easy-Inn in Glen Burnie, where a woman blew kisses at Jamie. He bit her
on the lip.
The mix of the screaming woman, her boyfriend and a frantic monkey in a crowded bar late at
night erupted into brawl that spilled into a back alley. Jamie bit two more people. Police used
pepper spay to subdue Mr. Ritterspach, who was charged with assault, reckless endangerment
and resisting arrest.
Animal control seized Jamie and fined the Ritterspachs $500.
Mr. Ritterspach acknowledges he was wrong to take Jamie out, and says that if they get the
monkey back, they'll never do it again.
"The only thing I can do is say if we can just get our child back, the monkey will never be in
public again," he said.

The letter from Jean that Colleen referred to Part 2
I really don't care how you mishandle the publics money---even though I know you are doing something illegal. But this last monkey --- Jamie--you grabbed him free and you are only keeping him to suck as much as you can out of the story. You said you saved the monkeys life. That is a lie. We called the people who were holding Jamie, prior to you getting your greedy paws on him. We were told that at no time was Jamie in any danger of being put to sleep. It is unfortunate that Jamie's owners were not given the choice of where he would be placed---until this case is settled.
You do not love these monkeys or you would send Jamie back to the people who raised him. How do I know? I lost my baby in 1987 because I trusted a corrupt vet. When my check cleared her bank she then told me to take Coco to Boston. But by then it was too late to save him. I was ill for a long time and under a doctors care. That Woolly had been my companion for 20 years---had slept with me---eaten off my dinner plate---kept me cheered through the suicide of my son---and now he was gone and I had this hole somewhere around my chest, that would not go away. That is what you are doing to Jamies owners. They have one son and have lost several children. They made a mistake and deserve a second chance. And you have no right to Jamie because you don't love him like his owners do. Jamies owner could go out and buy another Macaque monkey but it would not be Jamie. They know that just as I understand it. And if you loved a monkey you would understand it also.
You should be investigated by the Attorney Generals office because I know you are spending money sent to you for the needs of the animals under your care---it was never meant to buy up baby monkeys and you must realize that. I take it there are laws in Maryland that control such things.
I don't think you have the funds to keep this quiet like the man in Texas had. The Simian Society may promise to stand with you---but most of the people who run that are corrupt themselves. If they were honest they would not have backed that sanctuary, I mentioned earlier. Instead they continued to cover for that man by collecting the court documents. They have refused to warn their members to find another sanctuary and not send .monkeys down to a place that has been proven to be an abusive place. He will throw monkeys in to one place and stand and watch them tear each other to pieces. Now that he thinks he is above the law, conditions have gotten worse. An SSA member told me just a short while ago, that anyone going there now has to call ahead and if they sound like trouble they don't get in. This policy of letting former owners, of the monkeys sent to him, see and visit their monkeys must have been canceled. He may not be out of the woods yet. We were told by Mr.Vinson, Ass. Attorney General that eventually he will answer to his crimes. I will wait until hell becomes a frozen wasteland.
Give Jamie back while there is still time. You don't need the kind of trouble that you will surely have if you decide to fight this.
And please do not send any more of your driveling newsletters. Do you think I would support you after JAMIE?
End of letter.

Colleen Layton,
I appreciate your prompt assistance in maintaining a monkey recently impounded by Anne Arundel County Animal Control.
On April 3, 1999 our agency impounded a Macaque Monkey after repeated "Dangerous Order" violations by owners, Steven and Kimberly Ritterspach. The Order was established due to a progression of several bite incidents involving the monkey over a two year period. This agency is in search of an alterative to destruction of this animal, yet is determined to permanently remove it from an irresponsible environment that has recklessly jeopardized the safety of the public.
Your organization comes highly recommended by the Baltimore Zoo as a facility fully equipped, secure and with thirty years experience in handling primates. Most unique is your organizations' willingness to allow "open" visitation to previous monkey owners. Our agency therefore asks, that your organization maintain this monkey during its thirty (30) day quarantine, effective April 3 through May 3, 1999. Blood work must be performed as soon as possible at the request of the county's Health Department. Dr. Cranfield should contact Dr. Joe Hormon directly at 410-222-7256 with the results. Also during this time, I will notify the owners of the agency's intent to relinquish permanent care and custody of the monkey to your organization after the quarantine. If this decision is accepted by the owners, I will provide the necessary documentation to satisfy ownership transfer.
In the event the owners challenge the relinquishment of ownership, I ask that your organization maintain the animal until a legal decision is rendered. Please understand that legal proceedings may involve months of litigation before a final decision is made.
The monkey shall remain the property of Anne Arundel County Animal Control until permanently relinquished to your organization. Any problems are to be directed to either myself or Kennel Supervisor Roxanne Hatcher.
Once again I thank you for your assistance and I am relieved to have encountered an organization which is able and willing to offer not only its assistance and expertise, but what I feel is a wonderful solution for the animal, the owners and the citizens of Anne Arundel County.
Sincerely,
(Her Signature)

To whom it may concern:
This letter is being written on behalf of Mrs. Colleen Layton and Frisky's Primate and Wildlife Sanctuary.
I have known Colleen since 1993. She is the baby sitter for our two squirrel monkeys Zoey and Cocoa. We have always been delighted to send them out to Frisky's when we went on vacation or to our home in the islands where they are not allowed to go.
Our monkeys are like our children and I would only leave them in the best of care. Colleen certainly qualifies. She is a loving animal lover and puts these animals before herself and her needs. Colleen is constantly struggling with flea markets and all sorts of newsletters to drum up the monies necessary to keep this nonprofit organization going. I have seen her rise at 6:00 A.M. and not to sleep when there has been a sick monkey. Her husband Scott is just as supportive to this sanctuary and helps in anyway he can to give her a hand.
Having two monkeys of my own, I know the time and the monies necessary to take care of them. I commend Colleen for all of the help and time she has provided for our two girls. This woman has gone beyond her scope of work to make a safe haven for these primates and deserves nothing other than an award for her selflessness.
If you have any questions that I can assist you with please feel free to call me anytime at xxx-xxx-xxxx and I will be happy to provide you with any other information.
Yours truly,

You, lady, have no idea what the hell youre talking about!
I've been a volunteer for Frisky's for many years and nothing you say is true!
First of all, it is illegal in Maryland to own a simian without the proper permits.Your son did not
have the proper permits, the monkey bit someone, so animal control confiscated his monkey. He is
bitter and now wants to punish Frisky's for his own stupidity!
Coleen has devoted her entire life to saving animals! She did not ask to get your son's
monkey...animal control brought him to her!And yes, she has paid over $2,000 in her own vet bills
because your son did not take proper care of that monkey. She is not taking care of the monkey for
her own selfish reasons.....if only you'd take time to know her, you'd realize what you say is such a
joke! He is another monkey that will cost her more money and more time! And as afar as money
goes....they have none to spare! If you took the time to kfind out anything about Frisky's, you would
know that her husbands entire paycheck goes toward the caring for the property and the animals.
Donations a few and far between and she gets NO private or government funding!!!There are
many times I've seen her go without dinner, so that the animals will have food!
So you have some nerve making all kinds of accusations about something which you know nothing
about!!You should be mad at your son for being so stupid and careless as to not only bring a
monkey to the state of Marylnad but to put it in a situation where it bit someone! Frisky's is a sfe
haven for this monkey that was confiscated by ANIMAL CONTROL... not Frisky's!And let me
tell you something else......The monkeys at Frisky's are treated better than anyone elst could
possible treat them...including your son. She has devoted her life to loving and caring for these
creature..so much so that herself and her husband are neglected in benefit to the monkeys.
And, lastly, I guarantee you son will NOT get that monkey back ...he comitted a crime having the
monkey in the first place, and no one has ever goten a monkey back in Maryland!

From: Amy on 09/18/99
I am a student of Wildlife Management at the University of Maryland and hope to get my graduate degree in primatology. I have been a volenteer at Frisky's since April 1999. Colleen and her many primate companions have taught me a lot about monkey behavior and their proper care in captivity. I, too, can attest to the fact that all of the primates and wildlife that are brought into the sanctuary are very well cared for and very much loved. Colleen and Scott have devoted all of their time and personal finances to care for animals. No, they don't have a 9 to 5 job, as one respondent mentioned. They have a 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year job. Most people (including myself) could not handle this rigorous schedule... let alone without pay! Knowing these people, it disturbs me that they are being unjustly attacked (through the media, courts, and now the internet) by the former owners of Jamie, the 2-year old Bonnet Macaque monkey.
Anyone who has done any research on monkeys, especially macaques, would know that they are highly unpredictable and prone to violent behavior when they feel threatened or just want to 'rough house'... and they can do sizable damage with their long canines and sharp nails. Macaques (and most other primates) do not make good pets and are certainly not safe to have around children. They are generally cute and cuddly when they are young, but they quickly become 'teenagers' and begin to try their dominance within the group... their human household. Most people buy them when they are at this cute cuddly stage and don't realize what they are getting into. That is the reason a lot of the macaques are placed, by their owners, at primate sanctuaries like Frisky's. They are wild animals and, in my opinion, should be kept that way. Trying to replace a monkey for a human baby is very misleading and can be dangerous to owners and onlookers alike (as in the bar brawl). Unfortunately, monkeys and other wild animals continue to be sold both on the black market and through legal trade. Most people don't realize that for every baby monkey that is captured in the wild, 5 to 20 adults die trying to protect it. These babies are then sold to zoos, research centers, breeders, and average citizens.
But I wander...
The point I'm trying to make is that I have worked at Frisky's and I know first hand that the animals are well cared for and loved. They're well fed, provided with a clean and stimulating environment, and given all the love and attention they could ever hope for. They also have many companions of their own species, which is important for such highly social creatures (primates live in groups just like humans do).
I also know that Colleen has not stolen any monkeys, nor does she breed them, nor does she sell them. All of her monkeys come from owners who could no longer handle them, people who have either mistreated them or who lived in an area where they are illegal as pets, and have subsequently had them taken away by Animal Control. They also come from psycological research centers and have since been retired to Frisky's as opposed to being "put down". None of these monkeys can be rereleased into the wild, as they have been raised atleast most of their lives in captivity, and would be unable to survive. Some of them also suffer various health conditions due to previous inadequate diets (this is especially high among research animals). They need constant care in order to live a normal and healthy captive life.
In response to Ms. Judy Ritterspach who posted the same letter several times on this page: I'm not sure what contradictions you're refering to in the text of whatever newsletter you're referencing, but I apologize if I have botched my facts. I have written and edited the majority of the last two newsletters. This is a pioneer effort on my part, the first time I have tried to do one of these publications.
Generally, the newsletters for Frisky's are put together in pieces by various volenteers and then assembled, copied, and sent out. Colleen does not have enough time in the day to fit in personally writing each newsletter. She doesn't even have a funtional computer to help with such a task. The other volenteers and myself provide these efforts. Again, I apologize if we have not all gotten our facts straight or have repeated information before putting it into print.
As for the issue of Jamie's care costs, the actual veterinary bill was printed in the newsletter. The $1200 refered to the vet bill itself. The sum of +$2000 refered to the the combined total of the vet bill and food, additional housing, etc. All of this was spelled out very clearly in both the text of the newsletter, and in the cost sheet I provided. As of the date of this correspondence, Colleen has received no money from Mr. Ritterspach, as was claimed.
Concerning the animals that were turned away, this refers to abandoned domestics such as dogs, cats, domestic rabbits and livestock. Frisky's is a wildlife and primate sanctuary, not the local pound. Colleen has had to discontinue taking in domestics because it was eating up too much time and funds from wildlife and primate rescue. There are many other "no kill" organizations, such as your local SPCA, that take in unwanted domestics. All of this was also clearly spelled out in the newsletter. I suggest you take the time to actually read it before jumping to conclusions.
(Note: I am not including my e-mail address in this letter because I don't wish to receive the same kind of harassment from the Ritterspachs as Frisky's has. I get enough junk mail as it is.)

I can only say to you if you want to know the real Collean Layton then you need to do your homework.A lot have and found out that she wouldnt know the truth if it hit her in the face. You to will get to know all about her in time as will all primate lovers. The fact that Jamie ended up at Friskts was no ones fault other than mine.We didnt have any problem with her until she started her lies to Animal Control. She claims she has a video of my wife and I harassing her at Friskys. Tell her to show it to you. She cant because we have never been to her place. If she wants to talk about videos, ask her to show you the one of her having every tooth in Gizmo head pulled. At the time she is quite proud of herself. When she get so much bad press about it she than claims he was biting himself. I don't see any bite marks on him in the video, you tell me! You only know what collean tells you.Yes,Jamie did have all the permits and USDA papers. What my mother said in her post was all true and we can prove that.Do you really think people involved with primates buy her sad story about all the newborn monkeys that were rejected by their mothers? And good old DR.DOLITTLE steps in and saves their life. Let me say in closing ,dont take her at face value.
