Baby Monkey care Guide by Colleen Layton part 1
Tips For Raising & Happy healthy Monkey
Congratulations!!!
You are either considering, or, are already now the proud owner of an adorable new monkey. Your soft, wide eyed primate will charm and delight you with its playfulness and surprise you with it's intelligence and curiosity as it discovers the world around it. Each day will bring new adventures for your monkey and new joys with insights for you. It is especially important that your growing monkey receives the care, nutrition, and security it needs during its first year, to help it become a well-behaved adult. We here a Frisky's Wildlife and Primate Sanctuary Inc. are here for you both.
It will require safe surroundings, attentive daily care, proper nutrition and enrichments and appropriate veterinary attention. Your efforts now will be rewarded later when you boisterous baby monkey matures into a treasured friend.
This information booklet contains many helpful tips for new monkey owners/parents from how to welcome your monkey to it's new home and family to keeping it healthy and well-behaved. We've tried to anticipate all of the questions you'll need answers to as you begin your journey together. And remember your monkey will still need professional veterinary care too!
Good luck with your new monkey. Have fun, and remember it's only the beginning of a long responsible and wonderful relationship.
Bringing Home Your New Baby Monkey
Basic supplies provide the best possible care and security. Prepare for your monkey's homecoming by having these basic supplies on hand for proper care:
A well-ventilated and secure carrier for transporting your monkey. Make sure it's easy to clean and large enough for a adult monkey to comfortably stand up and turn around in. Line the bottom with a un-torn towel or fleece bedding to provide comfort. Note: If held together by nut and bolts- Be sure they are fight!!
Clean fresh fruit and vegetables and a drip water bottle secured well to the carrier. I personally use slices of oranges, grapes and bananas and a few pieces of baked carrots and potatoes. Note: Give sparingly
Your monkey should have it's own bed area in a quiet, comfortable corner of a large enclosed cage, away from main traffic areas. Put an old item of clothing or your bedding that contains your scent in your monkey's bed to make him feel secure. Some monkeys may choose not to sleep in their beds.
Safe and fun toys-ones made especially for monkeys-maybe hard to find. We like to be sure we can wash and sterilize all toys. You will not want any that can be splintered, broken, torn apart or swallowed. So be sure you choose toys wisely. But, lots of strong toys, heavy ropes and PVC Pipes will keep your monkey happily enriched mentally.
A high quality monkey chow like ZuPreem or Purina Monkey Biscuits provides the protein, calcium, vitamin, D-3 and other important nutrients to help ensure the healthy, normal growth of your species of monkey. We give our infant monkeys ˝ to 1 ounce every 2 to 3 hours, at night between 9 PM - 9 AM every 3-4 hours, being sure to burp after feedings. We start our monkeys to treats of monkey Chow Biscuits by ZuPreem, soaked in warm formula or watered down baby- juices. What is not ate in an hour or two should be tossed out, for it will sour. (Of course we give ours to our chickens).
Tasty treats like a couple of small mealworms or small pieces of fruit are great for training and rewarding your monkey.

Meeting the family
Introducing your baby monkey to kids and adults. Your monkey has a lot of things to adjust to in his new home, including you and the members of your family.
To help your monkey get used to your voice, speak to him often in a soothing, gentle way. Talk softly while he's eating and give him lots of praise for any thing he does that really pleases you. Like proper behavior, coming to you when you gently call to him, when he's nice to other pets, people, and of course you. Oh, and lets not forget, when you ask him to not touch something.
If there are children in your household, gradually introduce your monkey to children, especially small children. Let them play gently for very short periods of time. Emphasize that monkeys are more than emotionally sensitive- they don't like to be poked, squeezed, teased, pulled or surprised. Loud voices and even joyful screams could very likely have your monkey react with severe biting.
Teach your family and your friends to let it be the monkey's idea to share time. Don't ever force it to do anything. He will rebel badly when he's an adult. Here at Frisky's gentle, but firm holds to ankles and or tails has worked well till, monkeys reached 3-4 years old. Smaller species of monkeys like Marmosets and Squirrel monkeys mature around 2-3 years old.
PLEASE BE CAREFUL taking your precious monkey off of your private property is not a good idea!!!
Other Pets In The House
Existing pets normally will get along with a newcomer if introduced gradually and carefully.
To introduce a cat to your monkey, place them in the same room with their bowls just a little food at opposite ends of the room, so they can get to know and come together gradually
Do not leave existing pets and the monkey together unattended, not even if you are sure they are friends. Dogs may take a longer time to get used to your monkey.
Give your current household pet extra attention so he's not jealous of the monkey.
What's For Dinner
Special Nutrition For A Growing Monkey Youngster
Your monkey's first year is all important. As your monkey grows from an infant to a young juvenile monkey, he'll need extra nutrition for strong bones and teeth, a lustrous coat of fur and bright eyes.
Note: As manager and main care taker of the monkeys at Frisky's Wildlife and Primate Sanctuary Inc. I swell with inside pride. When we are told what beautiful, healthy, brighteyed monkeys we have here. Their beautiful coats of fur with strong muscled bodies, happily playing through the days and years they are here. And though your monkey may look like he's grown up, your monkey needs the nutrition to continue to develop.

How To Feed Your Monkey
Find a comfortable convenient spot to feed you monkey away from family traffic, noise, and distractions.
Try to keep your monkey's feeding area and water bottles in the same location.
Feed your monkey at the same time every day to establish a routine. Remember, monkeys eat fruits, vegetables, grains, and small amounts of white meat. Note: We bake a chicken for our monkeys once a week. Being sure they don't get any of the bones.
Always keep the feeding areas and water bottles clean. We here at Frisky's don't expect our monkeys to drink from or eat from any thing we wouldn't.
Provide an adequate supply of clean fresh water daily.
If your monkey refuses to eat for a prolonged length of time, contact your veterinarian or Frisky's Wildlife and Primate Sanctuary Inc. Phone # : 410- 418-8899 or fax * 410-418-5402
Feed your monkey treats to reward good behavior. But.... be careful not to over indulge your monkey.
Visiting The Veterinarian
A good veterinarian that has experience in primates is essential to your monkey's health and well being. Frisky's can assist you if you need a veterinarian in your area.
‘Important Note'
There are very few veterinarians that have real experience in dealing with primates. So be ready to travel a distance to get to one.
Make Sure Your Monkey Is Properly Vaccinated
Take your new monkey to the veterinarian for his first visit as soon as possible. Provide as much history and information on your monkey as you can.
Your veterinarian will set up your monkey's initial vaccinations beginning sometime around 9 months to 1 year old. Tetanus, Rabies, blood-work checking for internal and external parasites.
Be sure to return your monkey for routine checkups and immunizations as scheduled by your veterinarian.
Note: We do our monkeys here at Frisky's Sanctuary once a year. Doing everything from teeth cleaning to cutting toenails and T-B test to the left eyelid. Along with complete blood work up-stool check and immunization shots.
Some Signs That May Call For A Visit To The Veterinarian
Loss of appetite for several day: in a row
Persistent vomiting
Severe diarrhea for more than 24 hours
Bloody diarrhea
Sudden weight loss or gain
Straining to urinate or blood in the urine. Note: It will be dark in color and have a metal smell
Labored breathing or panting

Safety First
Preventative measures provide a safe environment. Taking the time to monkey- proof your home can help prevent serious accidents or injury to your curious new monkey.
I must point out that it is very very important that you should only let your monkey out of his in closured area when you can supervise everything he does.
Safely store away all toxic substances sue as cleaning fluids, pesticides, fertilizers, detergents, disinfectants, bleaches, paint and paint thinner, medications and antifreeze. Some plants, cigarettes, ashtrays, alcohol and candies should be kept out of monkey areas.
Minimize exposed electrical cords or tuck them against a baseboard behind heavy furniture to prevent your monkey from chewing them or hanging themselves. Note: There are too many monkey deaths. Do your best not to suffer from such a horror.
Get rid of poisonous house plants, ask your veterinarian for a list or write to: FRISKY'S P. O. Box 306, Woodstock, MD 21163
Clean cages twice a week, even the tops, ropes, and hammocks
Develop Good Habits And Routines Make Every Day Safe r
Always keep toilet lids down. This will keep your monkey out of contaminated water and will also prevent him form swallowing harmful toilet bowl cleaners.
Put away plastic bags. Your monkey could suffocate inside one, or swallow bits of plastic if he chews or tears one.
Keep harmful small, sharp objects like pins, needles, beads and staples out of your monkey's reach. Especially lead pencils!!! They intrigue all monkeys.
Do not give your monkey or let him get into strings, yarn, ribbon, spools of thread, rubber bands, aluminum foil or cellophane, corks or any kind of wire or twist ties.
Going To Bathroom
Some baby monkeys will allow you to diaper them. Premi diapers from hospital pediatrics supplies can be purchased and used by simply punching a hole in the center of the diapers. We use a Philips screwdriver because we try to avoid using sharp instruments around monkeys. So do several in advance and keep your screwdriver safely kept away. Putting them on backwards will keep the tape in the back of the monkey, which keeps the monkey out of reach of tearing it and is easier for you to change.
Mostly we do what we call quick wipes. Cleaning up often. Doing what we call poop patrol or cleaning up the land mines. We water down and a bottle of Clorox Clean Up and after we spray and wipe, we re-wipe with a plain water wet wash cloth. Note: Of course you know not to let your monkey near this procedure and cleaning time.
On Monkey's Best Behavior
Train With Kindness And Good Treatment
A monkey's behavior is largely instinctive. Monkeys are very very curious, playful and love to climb. We at Frisky' think some intentionally misbehave. But, monkeys need you to react appropriately to help him develop good behavior for life.
A firm "NO" usually stops naughty behavior. Adult monkeys will sometimes become aggressive at this, so train young while you can.
A squirt of water also helps stop bad habits.
A bored monkey usually misbehaves to be the center of attention. So, be sure to provide diversions like safe toys. We use several and rotate often. Note: If they have a special toy they want with them often, only remove it long enough to clean it, then return it to your monkey promptly.
Monkeys are what we call " Dawn to Dusk Creatures". Getting up early and going to bed early. Frisky's monkeys all settle down for the night between 8 PM and 10 PM. Note: We do feed baby monkeys (under 1 year old) if he awakens us during the night with about ounces of ready to feed baby formula.
Discourage nipping by disengaging your hand and gently pushing towards him. Divert to a toy. Never, never roughhouse with monkeys, you do not want your monkey to learn aggressiveness. Brad and Trouble

Bye Bye Baby Monkey
The day will come when your monkey is no longer a affectionate baby. He's officially considered a juvenile or an adult, depending on the species of monkey you have, between the ages of 2 to 4 years old. Hopefully by then your monkey is a happy, healthy monkey. Thanks to your love, care and patience!
Life stages change as your monkey gets older. He will rebel against your authority, pretty much the same way a teenager does. They love you, but don't want to be controlled, but will still expect you to continue to provide for all his needs as you have done so in the past. This will be a hard time for the both of you, because even though your common sense understands the changes, your bonded heart will take it personnel. Try not to take it personal. He still loves and needs you.
Most mature monkeys bite, scratch, pinch, and pull hair. To traumatize or terrorize gives them a sense of power. Your monkey is just being a monkey. We hope you can accept this. Goodluck. Don't give up. If you need us or advice feel free to call. We'll try to help. We feel no question or problem is stupid, if you don't know the answer.

Oh! Thanks so much for the information you provided! I found your guide so useful and I would like a guide for my home.
I am new to monkeys and I am sure that I will be contacting your for your advice.
I have a 8 week old Capuchin,cinnamon male. He is a delight.
My son purchased him from exotic cargo zoo amimals. Tyler is his name and I can't stand it when my son wants to take him back home. I want him here all the time. He is my,'Grandbaby'now!
I want to learn all I can about him, so feel free to send me anything I can read to educate myself for him!
May I urge those folks out there who are considering purchasing a Primate, this is a serious step to take in owning a Primate. You must follow feeding and sleeping habits strictly. You must consider your personal life before you make this commitment to a Primate. My son is a typical 21 year old who stays up late and wants to feed Tyler on his schedule. This is not acceptable for a Primate...he is a baby. And babies need to be on a schedule, there's!
I am at home bound and I have the time to spend with Tyler. If you don't have the time...don't purchase one.
Thanks,
Monkeymom

NEWS FLASH
The Life saver Colleen Layton Owner of a So CALLED Sanctuary (FRISKYS) Seems to have made the news. But I am sure you good people only heard her about what a life saver she is and needs your money. Well it seems that Miss Layton made the Baltimore Sun news back in 1995.When Animal Control and Department of Natural Resources Police went to her place and took raccoons that she was breading from her and put them down. She has claimed to all her supporters that she is a Wildlife Sanctuary. Well not according to DNA Police. All the wildlife were her pets and her HOBBY but she still put out newsletters asking the public to support her hobby. If anyone is interested in the truth about this ,I will send a copy of the Baltimore Sun to Monkey Matters for all to view.
I have been reading about the Ritterspach's and their monkey that was taken by Animal Control and how Colleen Layton said they were irresponsible primate owners and packs her newsletters full of newspaper articles about how they took Jamie into the public and endangered the public. She feels they should never get Jamie back. Well, have your heard the saying :PEOPLE THAT LIVE IN GLASS HOUSES, SHOULD'NT THROW STONES?
It seems that Miss Layton has had her own problems with taking monkeys out into the public. Such as the case in Howard County where she took her Pet monkey into a Department Store and the woman sued her for a million dollars. It is public record. It is case #90ca15092, the Department store was sued and Layton. Now if you are the SSA you would want to believe the story Friskys told and wouldn't want to believe that they help support her Hobby. You see if all her supporters took the time to check her out they would find that she is not USDA licensed is not Licensed with the State to be fundraising. If she were then she would have to explain where all those baby monkeys came from. If her supporters found out that their donations went to buy baby monkeys and support her hobby, they would look bad. Let me just say that Miss Layton has been stealing from the public and getting away with it that the money became soooooooooooo good she couldn't stop herself.y Matters two volume book.

I am looking for a monkey that is a new world monkey that I can get
as a baby. I want one that will be very friendly. Will wear
diapers, and able to cope with a lot of admiration. I really
don't know what species is best. I just was watching the
Discovery Channel Pet Stories and there was a couple on there
that had a monkey they called mowguoy (spelling unsure). I
immediately fell in love and want to do more research on where
I need to fly or drive to, the expenses, training, everything
I would need to be able to bring me a baby home, one that will
fill a huge void in my life. If someone could direct me I would

let you put diapers on them? I mean, i don't want it to go to the
bathroom on the floor all the time. well, hope some of you answer
my question. Bye!

From: TRACEY on 05/17/01GOOD MORNING ALL!!!
FIRST LET ME SAY THAT I AM A MONKEY OWNER AND I WAS REALLY LUCKY WITH MY PURCHASE. ZSA ZSA IS LIKE MY DAUGHTER. YES TO DO THEY BITE SHE WAS RAISED TO NOT BUT SHE DOES LOVE TO PLAY HARD. IF AND WHEN YOU PURCHASE A MONKEY IT SHOULD NOT BE TO FILL A VOID OR BECAUSE YOU THINK IT IS A NOVELTY. ZSA ZSA TAKES ABOUT 18 HOURS OF MY TIME A DAY. THATS QUITE A BIT OF TIME. NEXT SHE IS A PIG TAILED MACAQUE AND FULL OF ENERGY. EVERY DAY IS A LEARNING PROCESS WITH HER, SO DONT THINK THAT EVERYTHING YOU READ WILL BE ALL YOU NEED. HER PERSONALITY IS VERY HUMAN AND SHE RESPONDS TO THE SAME EMOTIONS WE DO UNDER CIRCUMSTANCES. IF YOU HAVE ANY MORE QUESTIONS YOU CAN EMAIL ME AT
TSUMMERSCUTTER@AOL.COM I WILL RESPOND TO YOU
GOOD LUCK
