Comments On: Roger Williams Park Zoo

Last Sunday I spent in Rhode Island the smallest state which has the most coast line of any state. I visited Newport RI which is best-known for its resort section of magnificent estates. After I went to Roger Williams Park.
The 435-acre area has a chain of 10 lakes, extensive flower gardens and 9 miles of winding drives. The William E. Benedict Memorial to Music amphitheater is a stage for concerts and outdoor productions. Also on the grounds are greenhouses and Betsy Williams Cottage, built in 1773. Carousel Village features bumper boats, miniature golf, a replica of a Victorian carousel and other children's amusements and the Roger Williams Zoo.
Roger Williams Park Zoo is a participant in the Species Survival program, a cooperative effort by zoos through the American Zoological Association (AZA) to manage the population of rare and endangered animals (like the snow leopard pictured right). Look for this SSP symbol on animal information/species signs at our exhibits. The Zoo currently works with 17 SSP species, including the African elephant, snow leopard and cotton-top tamarin.
Primates I got to see at the zoo golden lion tamarins, cotton-top tamarins, sakis, common lemurs, black and white lemurs and...
White-Cheeked Gibbons
Hylobates concolor

Opera Stars who change their cloaks
The Iban People of Borneo refer to the dim time just before dawn as Empliau Bebungi. It means "the calling of the gibbons".
Gibbons sling early in the day. Their haunting echoing song can be heard up to a mile away through dense forest. These extraordinary songs help troops of gibbons locate each other. They also declare the troop's right to a certain area in the forest.
It's a little like claiming your blanket spot at a big outdoor picnic. About every five days, troops will meet at the edge of their territories to display acrobatics, make calls, and chase each other. This behavoir reinforce the boundaries.
The songs also strengthen the bond between gibbon family members. (Singing together does this in some human families, too.) Gibbons remain in family groups, with parents investing a lot of time in bringing up their young.
When baby gibbons are born they are pale brown, the color of their mothers. This camouflage helps them blend in and protects the baby. After about a year, their fur changes to black. During this time they spend more time with their father. Male gibbons are black. Later, the females turn pale brown again. Changing their color helps camouflage the young gibbons and protect them from predators.
Most of the six species of gibbons are found in Australasia, but white-checked gibbons, live in the forest of mainland Southeast Asia. It is the most highly endangered gibbon species. Military activities and deforestation in its home range have dramatically limited the white-cheeked gibbon's haabitat.
No Monkeying Around (or Tale of Tails)
Question: When is a monkey not a monkey?
Answer: When it has no tail.
Monkey have tails; apes do not. Gibbons have no tails, so they are not monkeys at all. They are apes.
Apes are usually larger than monkeys. Gibbons, however, are the smallest apes, weighing 13-18 Ibs.
Apes can really swing. Monkeys can leap and swing but to really travel any distance by wringing you must have an apes shoulder design. This hand-over-hand swinging is called brachiation (brake- eeay-shun). Of all the apes, gibbons arc the best brachiators. They can cover up to 30 feet between branches. Watch them as their move.
Living is trees helps gibbons avoid predators can the ground. They will sometimes hang from tree limbs to scoop water from a scream or pick up food, rather than risk walking on the ground.
Apes (gorillas, chimpanzees, bonobos, orangutans, gibbons arid siamangs) are our closest genetic relatives. All are generally highly intelligent, social, and display advanced reasoning skills. There is a lot to set in the eyes of a gibbon.
