Comments On: IS IT LEGAL TO SELL SPIDER MONKEYS IN A PET STORE IN THE U.S.?
From: Dolemite on 03/06/00
Hello. My girlfriend and I were looking in a local pet store the other day, and notices that they had two female Spider monkeys in a small glass cage for sale (the sign on the cage stated that "We eat people food and watch TV!" Ick.). Anyway, is this illegal? My girlfriend seems to think that selling monkeys in a pet store is against the law, but we don't know for sure. If it is, does anyone know who we should contact? This store sells all sorts of weird, exotic pets like porcupines and a sloth! I think something is fishy here...so, can anyone here help me? Thanks!

Call the Fish and Game in your state and ask them...Personally, it does sound sort of fishy to me as well. Good luck

i do recomend you check with your local fish and game. But i live in NY and it is legal to sell monkeys in pet stores. But i do not recomend that you buy them from a pet store for two reasons 1 many times the monkey is shiped to the store which is the worst thing that you can ever do to a monk and 2 many time the pet shop will incress the price to over $1500 from the reg price to make a profit.

Thanks to both of you. Actually, I live in NY too, but I didn't know for sure. I hope there are at least laws regarding the living conditions the monkeys should be kept in, because one tiny glass cage for two monkeys seemed somewhat inhumane. Also, my girlfriend and I had been in the shop several months prior, and one of the monkeys (the second must be a recent addition) was there even way back then- it just seemed wrong that she was stuck in that little cage all alone. Thanks again for your help.

I did not know that you lived in Ny but be sure to check with your local fish and game because i live in nassau county and i know the laws change through out the 5 burrows.

I know what store you're talking about on Hempstead Turnpike-it's called "For Birds Only." It's obvious that birds are not the only animals that they seel. I went there 4 years ago, and they had 4 monkeys. There are 2 big monkeys in small cages in the back of the store. When you go to see them, they put out their long arms between the bars, and try and hold your hand forever. It's so sad- they are definitely sensory deprived.

Yeah, that's the pet store. It's right on Hempstead Turnpike, next to a Chili's resturant (across from the Bethpage Motel). They keep the monkeys and other exotic animals in small glass cages. They just sit there, as if consumed with ennui and saddness. It's heartbreaking.
