Comments On: Lab Animals -vs- Pet Animal
From: ~Robin, MMom~ on 02/28/97This issue has been on my mind alot lately so I decided to voice my opinion. I sincerely do not think of the NHPs in my care as pets but then again it is clearly in the word choice and interpretation. Yet, I find it hard to digest that the very ones that do the hand-waving and the flame wars against those that share their lives with NHPs actively participate and endorse the experimentation in Labs on NHPs.
How can anyone find justification in this issue? How can this radical approach be acceptable to the general public? How can our government support this and how can we allow our government and our tax money to fund this sort of philosophy? How can anyone point fingers at us cute
pet monkey owners and then turn around and test a cosmetic by putting it directly in the eyes of a cute little monkey???? How can we allow this to happen? How can we allow those that appear to have the ego of a God and the scruples and concious of a hardened criminal to point their fingers at us?
Personally, I care much more for the NHPs than I do the HPs. Do not misunderstand, I feel a responsibility to contribute to society in whatever way I can and I am very concerned with Human issues but in this case my concern lie with the NHPs not the HPs.
There is no excuse for the mistreatment of any animal...not even the welfare of human kind. No one is excused based on the fact that are supposedly improving mankinds existence and resistance to disease. There is no moral exclusions, there are no exceptions. We were not put here to specify a group of lesser intelligence (only in a few cases) and experiment on them for the betterment of our own kind.
I would much rather see all the cute little monkeys of the world entirely in the private sector than any to be in the labs that our government supports and our taxes fund... How can one justify this radical opinion?
We need to remember that we, the people, are the government, we are the voice we are the only ones that can execute change and most importantly if we do nothing to bring about changes, we are as responsible as the person holding the cute little monkey injecting Hepatitis B or Aides directly into its little body..
Those that point their fingers at me or mine, please take the time to step back and climb down and look in the mirror. Evaluate your own sense of morality and ethics before you question mine. I do my best to abide by the laws of the land and I accept and embrace my individual responsibilities and try to give back to society than I take. What do you contribute? Do you justify your actions? Are you qualified to pass judgement?

Vey well put Robin!!
We are in full agreement with you on this one my dear!
We also feel these "LABS" should be required to follow all
the rules and regulations you and I do. 2'x2'x2' cageing
is a sin against nature.
The favorite come back is, "the animals were bred for this,
they don't miss what they don't know". That is BS as well.
Pain is pain---sickness is sickness

another.
keep up the great work Robin. We love ya!
