Comments On: Banning Monkeys In Arizona! HELP

From: mmom on 03/11/97

The AZ Game and Fish Dept is attempting to add all non-human primates to
the restricted list of animals on the basis of health and safety risks to
the human population in the state. The following paragraph is the segment
of the Petition for Rule to Arizona Game and Fish Commission which we need
to address:

"Pathogens that have been transmitted from non-human primates to humans
and vice versa include bacteria (tuberculosis, shigellosis, bacterial
pneumonias, salmonellosis, camplylobacteriosis), viruses (hepatitis A and
B, herpes viruses, pox viruses, measles, poliovirus), fungi and parasites
(giardiasis, amoebiasis, cryptosporidiosis). Many infections which have
been transmitted from primates to people have been severe, and some have
resulted in death."

The concerned people of Arizona urgently request your help. Information
concerning testing and/or treatment of diseases of concern, opinions on
relative pathogen risk and logical arguments supporting ability of owners
to control safety risks would be examples of desired input. It is our
opinion that the vast majority of captive-raised primate disease in private
collections is either of human origin or is not spread from the non-human
primate to the human population.
Your response would be appreciated ASAP as the hearing is scheduled for
March 21, 1997 in Phoenix.
The Meeting is at the State Fairgrounds in the Agriculture Bldg,March
21, 1997 at 1:30pm.
PLEASE HELP!!!

MMom, In my research i found a detailed zoonoses page on the internet that may be helpful. it is written by vets and is geared toword the "primates as pets" catagory. It includes the list of species generally kept as pets, acquirable zoonoses, likely hood of transfer and under what conditions usually transmitted, and precautions to prevent . Its 21 pages long, and i found very informative, as in it , it stated that most of the cases of being transmitted were in a testing facility or in quarantine after importation. Let me know if you want the address or if you already have it.

I would be interested in that site!

Also, if I lived in AZ, I would surely attend that meeting on the 21st to put in my 2 cents worth!

ok, here goes!!

uakari.primate.wisc.edu ( that's what it says at the top of the pages i printed out)

after you get there, click on zoonoses.

also, there is a veeerrrryyy extensive list at the end of it on ""suggested reading"" divided into catagories, each of the viruses, diseases, bacterials, parasites, etc.

also, i believe in the same place, but don't quote me, there are also a listing for zoonoses for other animals for comparison. I got one on birds, cats, dogs, and primates. Birds are the shortest, then primates, then dogs, and lastly cats. Interesting huh!!!???

I just read in today's Dallas Morning News that Arizona is still considering banning the primates but there would be the Grandfather clause meaning all monkeys that are presently residing there would be exempt.

Just talked with a vet in Vegas, who seems to know more that AZ officials about what is going on.

Doesn't look like the ban on ownership (except pongidea (sp)) which were already restricted is going to fly.

What is going to happen is required viral testing (Herpes-B, and the like) and possible registration requirements.

WHAT A PAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Will post more info as it becomes available.......

Update. Since Fish and Game tabled the proposed ban in March, there has been one "closed" meeting, called together by Dr. Leslie, state vet. on 6/10/97. This gathering was titled " a focus group" so therefore the public was not allowed to participate. During this meeting the word "ban" was not focused on, but rules and reg.'s were. Not much was accomplished, but there will be two more closed meetings in the future, first being 8/5/97, last, undetermined at this time, to be followed by public hearings before any decision will be rendered by Game and Fish. I will do my best to keep this updated.
