Comments On: Adopting an adult monkey

From: Diana on 08/08/00

10 days ago, I adopted a 4 year old, male, common squirrel monkey.
He is very sweet, and he is used to wearing diapers, when out of his cage. He has been with his origional owner since he was an infant, and treated with nothing but love and kindness.
My problem is, getting him to trust me and bond with me. I can get him out of his cage and diaper him, I have been bitten twice, but I expected it and remained calm. He does not even try and bite me any more. I want him to trust me, but he tries to avoid me, if I have him out and someone else is there, he will go to them and try and stay clear of me. I have taken him on two outings, he was very good, but same thing, preferred to go to someone else.
I go in with him and clean his cage, twice a day. He watches me, but will not come to me. I make sure I reach out and pet him, he lets me, but then moves away.
I want him to like me so much, I will do anything. I should also explain that this is my first non human primate.
Any suggestions?

I think that if you want him to get close to you...you get close to him..what I mean by that is when you go in to clean his cage take a toy and so snacks in there invit him in and give him a treat and try to use that toy to play with him...It will make him feel that your not only the one that has to do the dirty work for him but you can also have fun with him.....Good luck....and have fun!

I also adopted a Squirrel monkey (female) at the age of 5. She had not been handled at all. She waws also very malnourished. It took about 6-9 months before she trusted me. She tried to bite when handled but I let her know she didn't need to fear me. I rewarded her with a grape or raisen for not biting and talking to her in a soothing way. Shes nearly 20 yrs. old now and a wonderful pet. Still isn't crazy about a bath but doesn't protest like she used to. She loves our cat and snuggling on my shoulder. Judy

Thanks for the suggestions, I have tried them all. He is doing really well. I try a play with him, when I try and tickle him he will grab my fingers and jump up and down and scream. He still prefers to go to my husband, he will play with him.
The other day when I was in his cage cleaning, I was trying to play with him, he suddenly snached my glasses off of my face, he seemed to get so excited, chirping then he laid on them and did not want to give them back, I took them and had to pry his little hands off of them, as soon as I got them, he jumped for my face, but all he did was give me kisses.
I still have not learned the meaning of all his sounds and body language, I am trying though. When he jumped for my face I was not sure what I was in for, but it was just kisses. I have a lot to learn and experience. He and I will just have to learn together.

I adopted a 6 year old spider monkey - she had been abused by animal control for 2 years after having been raised like a baby. It took time and patience - funny thing that she also took more to my husband - even though I was the primary care giver. Monkeys are like people - they "pick" who they like the best. Annie and I were always friends and she loved me (died 2 months ago - would love to find another) but my husband was definitely her "daddy". Just be patient -the rewards the wonderful.

I'm very interested in adopting a monkey.I live in Florida and do not know of any primate adoption centers. If there is any way at all that you can help me with this I will be greatly appreciative. Also do you know if laboratory monkeys are given up for adoption when the lab is finished with them-I know this sounds terrible but I know these places exist and I would hate for them to be put to sleep when someone could welcome them into their home. Please contact me at rp716mango@aol.com

Thanks,
Rob

I am very interested in adopting a spider monkey. I do not know of any resources in my area. My family and I have alot of love to give and can provide a very nurturing environment. I have a 9 year old loving and affectionate son who would love it as a sibling. Please contact me if you know of available monkeys.

I am also very interested in adopting a monkey. I am not sure which type to get, because I haven't really seen one. I wouldn't mind getting one that is older, actually I might like it. Monkeys seem like such a good pet, and I would love it if someone could talk to me about it. Please, If you can help me e-mail me at ally-2000@worldnet.att.net

It is wonderful reading about how happy people are with their monkeys, I want what all of you have...

Also, If anyone has any information and opinions on monkeys, feel free to send it to me. I can never have enough opinions and information.
