Monkeys

We have an 8 year old female Rhesus Monkey - who has primary cholesterol disease. We need help from anyone who has seen this in a monkey and can tell us what they did to stop, slow down, or cure this problem.
We have tried diet, one human medication and various herbal drinks, but none of this has helped.
Any suggestions welcome!

Since I am a human primate that suffers from high cholesterol, I was wondering if your vet has offered anything like Zocor to lower the levels?

Sony,
Thanks for your input. We have tried only one medication which
was at the
suggestion of our Vet. It was Mevacor, which we understand is a human
drug that is used to treat this condition. It helped to lower the levels
some
but the side effects on our Monkey were more than we could allow.
She was very tired, lifeless, and lost her sense of balance.
The balance
was more than we could live with. A monkey who can not jump, run and
play, is not much of a monkey. She would be sitting on the counter and
fall off ... we worried about letting her out of our site for even a few
minutes.
So we stopped the drug ... now we hope to find something else.
I will ask the Vet about the drug you are taking and see if
he can run a check
on what the side effects might be! Thanks for the suggestion. If you think
of anything else that has helped you, please let us know! We really will
try anything that will not adversely affect our Monkey!

Try finding a veterinarian who uses acupuncture. There are
no side affects and I personally have benefitted from seeing one. I have
also used acupuncture and acupressure on my animals, domestic as well as
wildlife I have rehabilitated. It might be worth at least trying. Good
Luck. Peace Karen and Mookie

Dear Terri - I hope that your monkey is doing well. I have three cats, two dogs, two goldfish and a parrot....and a husband with hereditary high cholesterol. Diabetes runs in my family. Anyway, this might interest you. My husband and I have been taking a natural fiber dietary product called BiosLife (formulated by Rexall). We both have experienced wonderful results. If you want some basic data on BiosLife, type in BiosLife on your AOL search box and you will find us. Yes, it is indeed possible to lower your high cholesterol without using prescription drugs. Contact me direct if I can be of any other assistance. - Taffy Z. E-Mail: lzadnichek@aol.com

Does anyone know what causes this in Macaques? Both of my adults had hyperlipidemia. I thought it was d/t their abuse by Palauans (Water starvation)during infancy and adolesence. Could it be a high carbohydrate diet? Any body knows, please let me know. Want to prevent my little girls from ever getting this disease!
Does this percipitate hairloss? Thnks for caring, Joie
