I was given as a gift a monkey.It is a MIOPITHECUS TALAPOIN.
They told me that it its only fruit.
I got the monkey yesterday and I got into the net and searched for as much information I could find.
I only got "scientific info".
I cant find a sight that can help me raise and feed and train my monkey properly.
BUT THE MOST IMPORTAND IS that i read everywhere somenthing about "monkey chow". I dont know what this is and where I can buy it since I live in Greece. Today I saw wet "dirtings" from my monkey and I am beggining to worry.
Please help me with the feeding procedures and as to where to buy this monkey chow if it is essential.

Spiros, What kind of monkey do you have i.e. Capuchin, Spider, Squirrel monkey?? What is its age? That will depend on its diet. If you are feeding it only fruit it will no doubt have diarrhea. A good vet check up will help to determine the problem if its feeing or dysentary. Its important not to let it get dehydrated. Offer plenty of water. You can use a few drops of Pepto Bismol for diarrhea temporarily. Monkey Chow is a nutritional biscuit high in protein for monkeys. Most large pet shops like Petland or Pet Supplies Plus carry them. Also Jeffers. Their web address is www.jefferspet.com Monkeys need a balanced diet of vegetables, grains,nuts, and fruit. No junk food. They do like eggs and yougart. First of all thank you for all the usefull informaition you have given me :-).
The kind of monkey I own is called MIOPETHICUS TALAPOIN (or just TALAPOIN). Does this means that it belongs to a category you have mentioned or TALAPOIN are a category of their own?
Unfortunately they dont sell monkey chow here in Greece but I have send an urgent letter to a U.S.A company that does (Our Pets Store)and asked them if TALAPOINS will eat monkey chow.If they do then I will order some and will continue to do.
Any other advice with the feeding until I get the answer?

I have seen this site but they dint have any specific info on how to raises one.
I am sick worried though because my monkey will eat nothing but apple today and he has dhiarea.
He is also afraid of me and though he wont bite he wont come near me.
I also think that he dont drinks water.I put a cup near his mouth but he just ignores it.

He only eats apple.I have given him bannana,carrot,raisins,orange and crust bread but he will only eat the apple (and when he is REALLY hungry he will also eat some bannana and raisins but will not touch the rest).Are raisings good for his health?(or they will cause him more dhiarea?).Also HOW MUCH food must he eat?
He continues to have wet droppings today.

try offering dryed fruit ,mixed with nuts. boiled eggs,cooked rice.it seemed to work for me in the past with other hard to raise animals.then eventually introduce other foods when he is stronger.also leave the food in the cage with him .and leave him alone to eat on his own.try give milk in a bottle or substitute like simalac low iron.if he seems to like it mix other food with it .if he wont drink. because he is scared of you try putting it a bowl .and leaving it with him.also keep him in a warm area.i hope this helps.I'm no expert.These idears have worked for me in the past with other hard to feed exotics.if an animalis afraid leave him to himself.then he will usually eat.but if he is to young you might have to force feed a while.(if he won't drink a bottle)but give him time.

Do you have a vet or a zoo in your area that is familiar with your type of monkey? What about the person that gave it to you? You need to get someone to examine your monkey, either a vet or a zoo etc.
Also, I would try getting the monkey to drink anything. I would make sure that there is water all the time. Does he have a fresh water supply at all times? I would try leaving out bread, crackers, rice, boiled eggs, nuts,raw or cooked vegetables, maybe some dog food if you have any around. Basically at this point, just get fluids and any food in him that you can.
How old is the monkey? If it is a baby then it may not be able to provide itself with enough nourishment to sustain.
I want to stress to you how important it is that you try very hard to find someone to examine this monkey. The health condition you are describing is not a good sign and time is of essence!

First of all I would like to express my thanks to you all that took some time to help out little Tip.I was fortunate enough to be contacted by a woman that helped me a lot with his diet and now Tip is safe and sound and adjusting to his new enviroment.I also managed to get him to a vet that took samples of his stool and hair and the test results will be ready tommorow.
Tip is eating baby formula at the time with some fructose and flax oil added in it.He also eats some baby cereal mixed with smashed ki-wi and bannana. Finally he enjoes eating apple,bannana,ki-wi and moths!I try to give him new foods everyday and some of them he likes and some he doesnt.He also wears diapers at the time and he feels safe sleeping on my lap or next to his stuffed monkey :-).
He wears a red "pooh" blouse which he is proud of and he gets the kick playing with my pc keyboard!
He has a small problem with his tail though...
Small parts of it have no hair and are dry.Today when I got back from work I found that he has a red fluid on the end of his tail. I think its bacteria but the test results will propably show what it actually is.
Any suggestions on treatment?

P.S By the way my monkey's tail was healed with treatment using soya oil. I put every day some oil in a cloth and cover with it his wound. He has now recovered from this fungus.

Feed your monkey dog biscuits... don't import Munkee Chow from the states for christ sake! If you want a good guide to how to look after it read some books on Vegetarian Eating (for humans) - funnily enough monkeys are almost exactly like humans (normally less tolerant to milk fat) so feed/treat it like a human, plenty of fibre (nuts & nanas) LOADS of protein, water & stuff to clamber about on...
Alternatively carefully remove it's mushy insides & replace them with Meccano & batteries... xx S
